If the torque that's applied to the rear wheel hub is greater than the resistance generated by the mass of the bike (or car, truck or tractor) times the distance of the rear contact patch from said hub ("counter" torque?), then the front of the machine will lift. It doesn't matter whether the torque is applied through a shaft, a chain, a barge pole, the Coriolis effect or the fairies. The bikes(and cars, trucks and tractors)that lift their fronts are those with engine/transmission systems that can deliver torque to the drive hub(s)in excess of that required to propel the mass forward. The excess torque can do nothing except rotate the bike (or car, truck or tractor) around the hub. If the engine/transmission cannot deliver torque in that quantity, then the front of the bike (or car, truck or tractor) will, like that of a KLR ridden by an overweight, middle aged wannabe boy racer, stay firmly and irrevocably on the ground. Early beemers couldn't wheelie, but the reason has more to do with why a KLR has difficulty in this area than it has to do with the shaft drive. -- GW

I have no difficulty in this area on any KLR. Tony certainly does not have any difficulty. Want proof? http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/thad.champagne AT sb cglobal.net/my_photos later, thad> a KLR has difficulty in this area than it has to do with the shaft > drive. > > > -- > GW

The site won't let me in. I didn't say it couldn't be done, it can. It's difficult when the front is loaded up with a full tank, an overweight rider etc, that's all. My argument stands - the ability to raise the front is governed by whether or not the available torque exceeds that necessary to propel the bike forwards, not by how the torque is applied. -- GW>> Early beemers couldn't wheelie, but the reason has more to do with >why >> a KLR has difficulty in this area than it has to do with the shaft >> drive. >> >> >> -- >> GW > >I have no difficulty in this area on any KLR. cant post a link here, so after my last name type
the "@..." , dont be defensive - just having fun, ps in the
close up I was rather close to my drunk neighbor photographer who was
leaning on my brick mail box, that is my oh-shit look, i cant wheelie
with my mouth closed, the crown in the road draws me to side, only
after i am at the balance point can i "steer" back to the center, it
is
way easier to wheelie sitting on the rear of the seat w/o a full tank
of gas
there is a landing strip on a friends farm I practice all the time, I
started by doing the pop a wheelie thing, then progressed, very
important to work the throttle and practice using the foot brake
(over & over), once you arrive at the balance point you know it, my
riding bud is really good, he can stay up in 4th, he rides his like a
4-wheeler and is not terribly concerned about crashing
lemme see if it will link w/ quotes around it
"http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/thad.champagne@.../my_photos"
just copy and paste that in your browser w/o the quotes

Damn, I felt guilty about riding without my gear last night, and you have no helmet on! Caption #1 is an apt description. Those cute little girls in the 3rd and 4th pictures don't want to lose their dad, of that I am sure. My shaft drive 1982 Yamaha XZ550 Vision

wheelies in 1st gear without any effort beyond twisting the throttle.

Uh oh, .... this is disproving my Moreus Borielus Theory. More research
will be needed. Maybe ..... just maybe I could get a guvment grant to
do more research. Jennifer could be my assistant on this but she has
gone to the great trail ride in the sky. I can still see her one blue
eye and one green eye and get misty eyed myself.

any owners in savannah, ga?
Hi all,
are there any KLR 650 folks in Savannah?
I am a novice at tinkering, but would like to get to know my bike a
bit better, and eventually do a doohickey upgrade with somebody who's
a bit more experienced than I am.
If there are a few of you: interested in a clinic?
Cheers,
Imke
