best 650 might not be a klr
The KTM 640 was offered in two flavors in past years: a dual sport version that
looked like a dirt bike and the "Adventure" version that looked like a rally bike.
Both used an old KTM designed engine designated the LC-4. They are
diferent from the Husqvarna derived RFS engines that poer the EXC MXC
and SXC ranges. The 640 Adventure was disontinued the year that KTM
introduced the 950 Adventure so as to not canabilize sales of the new bike. I
THINK that the non-adventure version lived on in the form of the 620 or 625
SX. If I wanted that I'd get a 525 RFS instead. 2005 marks the first year of the
640 Adventure's reintroduction to the good old USofA. I think 6 or 9 hundred
of them will make it here. Yes they are HELLA expensive and if you love your
KLR they are NOT worth it. The suspention is (from what every one says) the
best part of the bike, and what makes it stand out from it. The huge tank gives
it the range of a KLR if it's desired. The seat is uncomfortable and the engine
is un-ballanced and therefore vibrates like crazy, prety much taking away the
desire from most people. It's kind like a KLR for hard-core dirt bikers. Sure
looks friggin swwweeet though.... and would DEFINATELY cost more than
$800. I can't wait to go see that POS this after!
