Regarding the jackass comment. To paraphrase Forset Gump ......."A jackass is as a jackass does."
We certainly don't need any more bad press due to noisy bikes in our area a couple of hours West of you. As more and more amateur ecologists enter the political spectrum we will find ourselves blocked from more and more areas because of a few who impose their noise on others. My stock KLR being ridden as quitely as possible was ordered from a BC Hydro campground recently. "Those things aren't allowed here." The reason? Noise from other bikes. Now another area is closed to all bikes because some jackass or jackasses needed to make noise.
Please get rid of the noisy exhaust or at the very least- stay away from here. I'm trying to be nice about this which goes against my nature....
Norm

OK, you're a jackass. I've been there too, when I was building my cafe racer I tried an XT500 supertrapp muffler on the end of the white bros headpipe- sort of looked like a flattrack exhaust for a Rotax 500. Besides not running all that well, it set off car alarms for about a block in any direction. Fun while it lasted (three days), sold it on ebay. -- Devon Brooklyn, NY A15-Z '01 KLR650 '81 SR500 cafe racer "The truth's not too popular these days....." Thanks for the support. For those just joining us, I called someone a jackass because I understood something they posted to mean they were riding offroad with a Big Gun race pipe, which has NO spark arrestor. IF someone did that, they would indeed be a jackass, or worse. BUT the person in question had purchased and fitted the accessory Big Gun spark arrestor. So he is NOT, in fact, actually a jackass. And again, Kent, I apologize for jumping to conclusions. You haven't posted on the list since my temper tantrum, and I hope you'll stick around. But I still say you're a sucker (or was it "knucklehead") for spending over $200 US on a noisemaker that will only get LOUDER, because somewhere inside your head noise = power. Sell it and spend the $$$ on suspension or brakes. You'll go faster, and be comfortable riding for longer with a quiet bike. I have been that same sucker (or knucklehead) myself, which is why I spoke up. I've tried five different exhaust setups including stock, and only found two that I liked- a stock pipe, and a Laser Pro-Duro "Quiet". FWIW with a stock shock, or a shock with the same travel as stock, the LPD won't rub the tire enough to matter. Unless you have studded tires. I'm using a stock pipe and selling the LPD. -- Devon Brooklyn, NY A15-Z '01 KLR650 '81 SR500 cafe racer "The truth's not too popular these days....." Honestly, there are five bikes in garage, and an additional two parts bikes. For the last year,my KLR has been the only bike that runs. The other bikes are all 'niche' bikes and my KLR is such a fun bike for doing anything and everything that I just can't find the time to service the others. Well, I do miss riding the DRZ and if my replacement starter switch doesn't cme in this weekend I might actually get it running, but the big Venture Royales are just a hairs breath of being offed to Cycle Recyclers in Chico and then I might have the room to turn the GS1150 into a long term project - got one with a half rebuilt engine and another with a odd short in the ignition wiring. Yep, the VRs are history since the KLR has become my touring rig. I need the DRZ for serious dirt thrills and I'll keep the Suzuki 1150s for those rare days when I just need to do 120 mph run down US395 in the early morning hours before the underpaid, overworked gendarmes of eastern California have gone on duty and one of my future goals is to take the 1150 to Colorado and collect a ton on every paved pass of 11,000' or higher. Like Devon I've tried many combos: stock, Cobra, IDS, couple of 'universal' and while stock wasn't bad with carb/airbox mods I'm happiest with my Supertrapp IDS 2 running eight discs. I've tried using all twelve discs but eight gives what I perceive to be more snap in the throttle response without reducing my terminal velocity. When the packing burns out it will get much louder, but hey, I've been repacking the mufflers on two-strokes about four times a year so it doesn't bother me to repack the IDS once or twice a year to keep it quiet. And like Devon, i was once a knucklehead tough it was back before I could legally enjoy a beer after a day's ride. Back then it was a Bassini Reverse Cone Megaphone on an SL125. Made it sound like a John Deere on serious steroids. Even when I had the stock exhaust there was this old fart in our neighborhood that sprayed motorcyclist just because he hated us and I use to enjoy coming home from my dishwashing job at midnight. would coast the bike with the clutch pulled in until I reached his property line and then dropped the clutch to redline the engine until I reached the end of his property and pulled the clutch in and actually coasted the last half mile home with a dead engine so the old man wouldn't feel the need to educate me - it was all downhill to my house off of CA SR108. While I've grown wiser, I still rankle at those folks that live next to a mountain highway and then insist truck driver's can't to use their jake brakes because of the noise pollution. Those are those folks I save my SL125 Reverse Cone Megaphone at 1 in the morning cure for.
