state laws regarding lane splitting nklr

Post by klr_a4 » Sat Nov 22, 2003 11:45 am

Good thing you're not a psychiatrist or you'd probably be psychoanalyzing everybody on the list. I really don't give a flying **** what the legal definition of lane splitting is. Lane splitting to me is all about defensive driving and staying in the pocket. If some less experienced rider is impeding the flow of traffic, I expect that he be aware enough of his surroundings that he knows I'm behind him and that he move over to allow me by. Motorcycle etiquette plain and simple. Conall --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "KLR Rider - Scott Adams" wrote:

think the following makes much sense since, and again from memory, I believe the requirements for legal lane splitting are that traffic has to be moving less than 45mph and you cannot be going more than 15mph different than the traffic around you. Doesn't leave much room for "faster" and "slower" lane splitting.

That's what I heard too, in motorcycle-themed traffic school. The law (in CA) is silent on what's safe or permissible. But you can get a ticket for reckless driving if you push it. The KLR with its wide bars and huge mirrors is not the best splitter, though. The bars will pass above most cars' mirrors, but are right at SUV height. Another reason to love SUVs...
