pro duro, big gun or supertrapp?

Post by dooden » Wed Jun 04, 2003 4:17 pm

Save your money and keep the stock muffler, if you want an opinion. As most have no doubt already said, no performance gain, lots of noise, repacking the stupid thing... for what ? Noise.. no thanks Not to mention having to rejet and stuff to make the bike run as good as it did before you "upgraded" the muffler. Buy stuff that will make the bike better not just loud. Springs, bash plate, bars that kind of stuff. Thats my $.02 worth and I am sticking to it. Dooden

pro duro, big gun or supertrapp?

Since the opinions have been expressed on the BG and PD, I'll add my .02 on the Supertrapp. I put an IDS2 Quiet Series on my A7 with 9 plates. The airfilter has been replaced with a Twinair and the pilot screw turned out one turn. The jetting seems to be about right, and the sound is a little louder and throatier than the stock can that had 15K miles on it. It certainly isn't objectionable unless you're totally into stealth. I also have a 4" Quiet Series that is likely quieter than a new KLR muffler sitting in my garage, and a 4" Race Series on my XT500. The XT is admittedly loud, but is earsplittingly loud with the plates and endcap removed. Cruising at 3500-4500 rpm its not bad, but it barks at WOT, but I don't often ride it that way, or in places where it would be out of place. What you do get with a Supertrapp is the ability to tune by adding and subtracting plates(increase/decrease back pressure, and sound to a point). You also have the opportunity to swap a race core with quiet core if you don't like the sound. The IDS2 series uses 3" diameter plates inside the muffler while the 4" uses plates the same diameter as the can itself. The IDS2s smaller diameter and angled tip is a plus on the KLR, IMO. The Supertrapp mufflers are well built, and if they have a weakness, its the screws and tapped holes for retaining the plates. These can be stripped if the user isn't careful at assembly or doesn't use anti-seize. Sometime back someone made the comment that a thumper will only sound like a lawnmower anyway, but I can tell you that my 10.5-1cr XT doesn't sound anything like a Briggs & Stratton. It revs quickly and sounds almost like a twin. Eric in Pa

pro duro, big gun or supertrapp?

I just went from a SuperTrapp IDS2 (came on the bike when I bought it) to the Pro Duro. I did it solely for the lower noise and I'm very pleased. I may have noticed a *slight* drop in upper RPM power, but the quieter system (and lack of repacking) is more than worth it for my needs. One drawback: the Pro Duro's spark arrestor isn't officially approved by the USFS. This was almost a deal killer for me. I'll likely be posting an IDS2 (with a free bag of packing material) on ebay soon.....

The Big Gun came with a sticker saying the pipe was approved, I left it on the side cover when I changed exhaust cans to the LP = Instant USFS approval. Like I said, I have gone on AMA rides where they check mufflers for legality, my LP passed no problem. All they do is jam a stick up your exhaust to make sure it has a baffle, basically. AFAIK I have started exactly zero forest fires. Thanks Stu

I'm happy with my IDS - bought it in 97, it survived the crash with the Ford and I'm still running it. Being the original design I don't have to worry about repacking it, but from day one I've been repacking the mufflers on my dirt bikes so I don't see that as a problem. I guess considering the amount of wrenching time I've spent on my race bikes I little extra maintenance on a play bike doesn't bother me. Out west I think having the USFS stamp on the spark arrestor is going to become a bigger issue. At this weekend's Dust Devils AMA DS ride they will be doing a spark arrestor inspection under the watchful eyes of the USFS. I'll let you know if the Forest Service lets them use the stick test - but based on AMA races I've run the spark arrestor/sound test as usually been a joke, or at least as far as how D36 has enforced it. BTW they will also be doing a voluntary USFS sound test with the warning that come 2005 it will be mandatory. Being involved with the BLM on OHV issues I can see the day is coming when strict enforcement will be the norm Pat G'ville, Nv [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
