pvc tool storage
Hello,
Anyone use the PVC type tool storage system without the "help" of the
Happy Trails highway peg to secure to?
TIA
Joe in IL
pvc tool storage
Hi Joe, I'm using a tool tube / footrest that sits on top of the U-bolts of my skid plate. I used 4 stainless hose clamps, two on each side of the frame tube, to clamp it into place. The clamps run around the tube and through the holes in the skid plate... If you don't have a skid plate, you could probably run the tube along one of the back frame supports, under the rack, or somewhere like that. Yo Mark, could you tell us what diameter/type tube you used ? What length did you settle on ? What plugs the ends ? How confident are you that the plugs won't take a dump ? Bogdan,
When I had a tool tube mounted, I used 4" Sched 40 PVC pipe, with
glue-in ends threaded for plugs. I used PVC cement for everything but
one end plug. The removeable end plug had a hole drilled in it that
lined up with a hole in the tube. I would use a bit of thick wire to
secure it.
The PVC cement basically solvent welds the pipe together, and metal wire
is very reliable.

Hey Bogdan, I just added a couple pictures and text on this to: http://klr6500.tripod.com/misc-info.htm I'll just paste in the text from that to answer your questions here, except for the last one. I'm not precisely sure what you mean about the plugs, but I'm certain they won't fall out, or screw loose or something. This has 4000 or 5000 miles on it with no problems. If you mean in the event of a crash, I honestly don't know. I'm using 4 good quality stainless hose clamps to keep the tube in place - it rests on top of the skid plate front frame mounting U-bolt - so I'm hopeful that it will provide at least some protection for the bike in the event of a tip over. That hasn't been tested, though, so it IS just a hope. ==== Here's a closeup of the ABS tool tube end. I used ABS only because I thought the black color would blend in better with the rest of the bike. I chose 2" (ID) ABS because I didn't need to carry a lot of stuff; I currently just have tire irons, hacksaw blades and a flare. This tool tube also serves as an excellent footrest, giving you a change of seating position on long trips. The total length of the tube, from end to end, is about 20". I chose this length because that's just inside the measurement from footpeg tip to footpeg tip. Just the tube itself is probably about 18.5" I got everything at Home Depot; 4 stainless hose clamps to keep it securely in place, a length of 2" ABS pipe, (I think it came in 10' lengths), the two adapters, the two end caps, and small containers of the special ABS cleaner and glue. The adapter is half smooth where it seals / welds to the pipe, and is threaded on the other half for the caps, or plugs. As you can see from the picture, I used recessed plugs with a large square center which can easily be turned by hand, the pliers of a multi-purpose tool, or whatever. It's very secure, but I don't know how it would hold up in a crash. I would hope that it would provide at least some kind of protection in the event of a tip over, but that hasn't been tested... Here's the full tube mounted. In addition to storage, it does work great as a footrest. You can probably use larger pipe if you want to carry more stuff, the 2" did all *I* needed it to. ==== I hope does the trick for you. Please feel free to give a yell if I didn't say enough, or wasn't clear. ABS or Schedule 40 PVC. If it ends up on it's side, it'll shatter
like glass. From a been there done that standpoint. Middle of a
stream, tools everwhere (thanks Mark Van Horn) I now use 3" sch80
pvc. It's 3/8-7/16th of an inch thick. Much thicker than sch40.
Glue on sch40 sockets and screw in caps. This HAS been laid down,
and no damage this time. Attached to the PD NERF/highway pegs with
2 stainless steel screw clamps. I tried using 4, the the center 2
kept snapping off. The outside ones hold just fine. The SCH40
fittings are just fine, no need to use the sch80 stuff if installed
right. You need some 3" sch80, let me know. I've got lots of it.

If you paint it with a paint containing a UV barrier it will not readily
shatter. The sun is an enemy to pvc. TC
