Yeah,in that many miles, a short guy like me might wear out a couple of ladders just climbing into the saddle.

My history; 1st = 1990 KLR650, bought new, January, 1990 for $3500 out the door. Retired at 65,000 miles, 1997. Sold for $600. 2nd = 1995 KLR650, bought new March, 1997 for $3750 out the door. Currently at 50,000 miles and counting. No problems with the doohicky with the 1990. Had to physiclly adjust doohicky for the 1995. I'd have to say that the guy is full of sh.... uh... poop. A question like this came up a while ago in an Email that I got, and I looked through the list messages to find some relevant results. Take a look at these numbers and see if you still think there's anything to worry about. I don't think you will! Of course, anything mechanical will fail if it isn't properly taken care of.... These all came from the list. I hope the original posters don't mind me including the simple headers, that's just to show that I didn't make this up, or something. I think such notion must have originated from either a troll tossing out flamebait or a beemer salesman trying to sell a 650GS, since anybody seriously suggesting a 30K lifespan obviously knows nothing whatsoever about KLRs. The reports on this board have me thoroughly convinced the bike will last to something approaching 6-figure miles or even more if I want to maintain it, just not sure yet if I'm one of the people who likes it well enough to *want* to keep it that long. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "Mark St.Hilaire, Sr" wrote:

I think the original statement was picked off of Florida Frank's site (Frank Campbell). He's a well-known world traveler, but way prejudiced toward BMWs. If he pops up here we can ask him about the F650 that ate its oil pump in Mongolia a couple or years ago. I believe BMW provided him that bike, in hopes that he would be a salesman. So you're theory is close to correct.

The most impressed I've been by any of those "world travellers" is the guy who recently went around the world on a Harley Electra Glide, going thru stuff and across things many riders would be hesitant to attempt on a dualsport or even dirtbike, all on this 800lb roadbeast obviously designed for lolling across the open highway and nothing else. Photos in "Hogtales" magazine are truly incredible. It took him a long time and some ingenuity but he made it.

34k with lots of sustained high-RPM operation plus lots of off-roading. The oil consumption hasn't increased as the bike has aged so far. RM

When I was shopping and trying to decide between a DR650 and the KLR650 I talked to a local independant mechanic who didn't sell motorcycles. He's been in business a long time and works on all makes/models dirtbikes. He said I shouldn't get either. He said I will have to rebuild the top end at about 30K miles. He said to get the Honda 650L. Obviously I didn't listen and gave more credibility to the testamonials given on this list. Matt

Thanks Ron, I corrected my email address. That info about the Duro sounds great and they are about the same price as the gp110. I ordered an IRC gp-1 for the front yesterday at my local shop for $37 plus tax, no shipping. The GP-1 looks to be about the same tread pattern as the OEM Dunlop and others on this list had good things to say about the GP-1. I'll compare it to the Dunlop which seemed to be great on the street, long wearing and was only lacking on slick mud in my opinion. It appears my riding is about the same as yours, freeway/surface road commuting, semi paved single lane, dirt/gravel rutted fire roads, and occasional 1st and 2nd gear single track and stream crossings. I choose not to sacrafice street performance because of the speed and proximity to other larger vehicles, rather lose a little off road grip and ride a bit more conservative off road. I was dissappointed with the OEM rear Dunlop as it was finished at about 5K miles and the road handling steadly declined due to the wide edges and increasing flat center. The IRC GP-110 was an improvement and I am thinking the Duro 904 may provide a few more miles with similar performance. Have an all day ride planned for Saturday with three KLR650s into the Pacific Coast range. Jackass road into San Benito County to New Idria, Clear Creek, Old Hernandez rd., La Gloria rd., Pacines, Panoche and Mercy Hot Springs. Should be good weather after recent rains keeping the dust down. --Jim
