klr650 vs. dr650se

Yeah, but for about $700.00 dollars more than a KLR you can have a dual-sported XR650R, which is a better dirt bike than a KTM 640. A lot less plastic to scratch when you drop it, and you will drop it. And a lot less potential electrical and mechanical problems. Oh, and put it together carefully at the factory as well. Unlike the KLR. Devon A15 (ridden Tumu's KTM640 a little bit) zensurweb admin wrote:

If scratched plastic is a valid concern, I'm not sure we have the same taste in trail riding. Also, I have heard the XR650R is really an open desert bike- it doesn't like being run on tight single-track and has overheating problems at low speeds in the woods. The KLR can be slogged through the sand and woods all day in 90deg heat in first and second gear without complaining. That's got to be worth something. I'll certainly believe the XR is more maintainance-friendly. Devon Russell Scott wrote:

I already sighed up and have the new card. It is part of the package when you add RV coverage, which I wanted so it would cover my boat trailer. The Motorcycle coverage covers tows costing up to $200, delivery of gas, lockout/locksmith assistance, and air for tires (quoted verbatim form the brochure). In So Cal, you just show your card and it's no out of pocket expense. Elsewhere, you pony up the cash and then they reimburse you later. You can use this up to $800 per year, and I just noticed you get a free map and a free book! "National Parks map, and Campbook" which I got neither! I'm stopping by the AAA office on the way to work today for sure. There is one thing, the brochure states "motorcycles that are licensed for highway use.......when service is rendered on roads regularly traveled by private passenger automobiles". The White Rim fits this description, I reckon. Right, folks? CA Stu

I rode an XR650R for a day on the roads to the north of Albuquerque this spring and discovered several things about my KLR. The XR feels a LOT lighter than the KLR. I didn't go off in the dirt, but it would clearly be a better dirt bike. The 3 gallon tank and the seat stank, however. After 240 miles my backside was seriously sore, to the point that I could still feel it the next morning. My KLR with a Corbin is a great street bike. Rode 370 miles of interstates and backroads going to a meeting yesterday, and while I was tired at the end of the day, I was fine this morning. I also like not having to worry about finding gas stations all the time. The biggest problem I had was finding the shift points on the road to Sandia Crest (several thousand feet elevation gain over 12 miles). My KLR has a 16 tooth front sprocket, and I think the XR was geared down a tooth. Really messed with my head, especially since the XR didn't have a tach. Ralph -- Ralph E.
