nklr:what?s the biggest thing you have seen flying down the roa

Post by jayed36 » Wed Dec 19, 2001 2:42 pm

This wasn't while I was on a bike, nor was it "flying", however it was in the road and I *did* hit it with my car... a spare tire/with rim lying in the middle of Route 15 near Williamsport, PA. It was about midnight, I was the only car on the road in that area. I was looking to my left briefly at a piece of property for sale, doing about 70 when I looked back to the road and saw this tire in my headlights. Too close to avoid it but was able to swerve enough to travel over it with my right side tires rather than catching it on something under the chasis (or so I thought). I slowed enough afterwards to determine my tires were still inflated and kept going. At the next red light, as I braked, a cloud of smoke caught up to me. Took it to the mechanic the next day, the tire had smashed both input/output transmission fluid lines. At that speed, I'm lucky it didn't just launch me into barrel roll. Had I been on a bike and not seen it, it surely would have launched me into a Superman dive over the bars. Jeff A15

Running up I-95 in the midst of heavy weekend traffic on my Connie (god how I hate that road), looked down to scan my instruments. Looked up and through the curve (in left hand lane) and saw something funny going on in my lane ahead. I slowed down to about 55mph (pi$$ the guy off behind me) and as I came around the bend a second later, I saw what was causing the commotion: about a half dozen unbroken cinder blocks. Ugh, they blended in almost perfectly with the road... I didn't see a pile up, but as I scooched around them, the ass who had been riding my bumper after I slowed down, hit one (or at least, he locked his brakes up pretty hard). I didn't stop, it is more dangerous on that road to be stopped than moving. Z

up and SNIP I bought an old boat and trailer in 1992 (76 Apollo 26 foot cabin cruiser) for peanuts, and on the way home from it's maiden ocean voyage I saw one of the tires of the dual axle boat trailer pass me in the fast lane. I had a flat tire on the way to the harbor, and the dipshit mechanic put WD40 on the lug bolts to loosen them, and of course after a few miles on the freeway that evening, they loosened right up again... Didn't hit anyone or anything, but ended up in the median of the 91 freeway by the 55 (back when they were building the toll lanes), and I remember the first couple of seconds thinking "What the ...? What kind of idiot would roll a tire down the freeway at 75 mph?" CA Stu

I was cruising down I40 a few months ago and saw what I thought was a huge pig lumbering along, but it was just a BMW GS. [g] Gino

Riding through Ottawa one day the car in front of me swerved out of the way to reveal a wooden pallet square in my lane. 120 km/hr in traffic. The old Goldwing 1200 I was riding changed lanes like never before. Just missed it. Riley A15 Montreal

Back in '76, my sister and I just about met up with a black angus bull early in the morning (dark), foggy, in a V-DUB Beetle! She was driving and never saw it...I was just able to make it out before we were about to nail it, and I jerked the wheel to the left and we barely missed it. I was about to change my pants when she says, "what the hell are you doing?"....We U-turned and went back just to see Mr. Angus just leaving the two-lane! She about had a heart attack! We've been extremely close, ever since. Joe

I've seen two bad accidents involving motorcycles and upside-down cars. Both were on curves at night. There were no lights on the cars and no one directing traffic. One of the motorcyclist was left in a field until daylight because there was no indication that another vehicle was involved. Harry SC

One of my father's favorite stories, he drove an ice cream truck one summer during high school. He was returning from his route at the end of the day, and came over a rise with the pedal on the floor. The truck had a governor, so that means he was going 60 maybe. It was one of the ice cream trucks that are built around a panel truck, with the high drivers seat (important!). He couldn't see the cow that had wandered into the road just on the other side of the rise, or wasn't looking, or was going too fast or perhaps all three. He broadsided the cow at maybe 50mph, later describing the results at similar to stomping on a ketchup packet. The insides of the cow exploded out of either end, and the truck engine ended up somewhere beneath the drivers seat. My dad was the only participant not totalled. Devon A15 kswndsrfr wrote:

I beg to differ with you about it probably not being off a truck or construction vehicle. I see plenty of shit flying off construction guys trucks not properly tied down. Biggest culprit is their ladders. Criswell Devon Jarvis wrote:
