A mod which I've done on at least 50 KLR as well as a host of other bikes, is to drill the right lower side of the steering head frame tube. On the KLR, drill above the bearing bulge. Thread for a 1/4" or 6 mm grease nipple and pump the assembly full of grease until it begins to come out on end. Wipe off the splurge and again, a couple of times after it warms up. That usually handles the bearing wear because it keeps water and grit out of the bearings. Every 6 months or year, give it a couple of shots or until clean grease shows. I've never had to adjust steering head bearings after doing this, FWIW. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h8rhb0ame3lgg91/AABU4m84Cxvi4fECYsfzxIrPa?dl=0 Not necessary, IME, to do it while disassembled because some grease on the drill bit and tap will collect any chips. I doubt a couple of chips will damage a roller bearing, regardless.

a little help from my friends

Post by zoot . » Sun Jul 24, 2016 6:04 pm

Day home from a eight days out. Maintenance ques. 2007 Gen I. Single 10mm bolt setting beneath the front sprocket cover, ahead of the shifter on the left case. Leaking oil. What is this, what is it holding together, and does it have a washer/crush washer that could be leaking? Check the output shaft already, not the source. Source is this bolt head and it felt tight when checked on the road. Oregon desert, Idaho Salmon river territory, Seven Devils, Elkhorns. Was a nice tour.

That is one of thirteen bolts holding the case halves together. I think it would be ok to remove it, clean and inspect the bolt and the case. If all looks ok (I bet it will) reinstall the bolt. Looks like it goes in clean and dry. Torque for the 8mm bolts is 14 foot pounds according to Clymer. I don't think it would hurt anything to put a dab of non hardening sealant under the head of the bolt. Excellent.  Suspected it might be as much.  I'll compare to the base manual since I think it had a torque listed for what looked like might be representing that bolt.  Wife also washed the bike so I'll probably keep a close eye to confirm the leak.  Thanks Jeff. t.
