helmet thread,....... nklr-ish
Ok enough with the Wee Storm comparisons,............. and this is not another oil thread.
Let's talk helmets. First, I think we can all agree that only a complete fool would ride without a helmet? When I bought my KLR in 2003 the previous owner threw in a Nolan flip face helmet. That helmet is basically about done, and I'm in the market for a new helmet. I have always used full face helmets, but I'm seriously considering buying another flip face helmet. Flip face helmets, in my opinion, are very handy, but, I have always been leary of the flip face feature.
It seems to me that if you take a hard fall, that lid can pop up? Also, many times I have to slam it down a few times to get it to lock. So I'm seriously thinking of going back to a full face helmet. However, the Nolan has been a pretty good helmet.
So my question is what are y'alls thoughts? Do you prefer a full face helmet or closed face. Does anyone use an open face helmet anymore?
Quick story, I once had a fellow otorcycle rider tell me that they do not use a helmet. I asked why? They said that if you sustain a head injury, and you are wearing a helmet, your head can't swell! I tried to explain to them that the cranium is a helmet that encases the brain. Your head can't swell. It seems that they had trouble understanding that concept. Interestingly, they rode a Wee Storm, go figure

If you want to spend some $$$ there is one or two DOT, SNELL and EMC certified modular helmets.I think Shoei makes one. They have to be well made.
It also depends where you live. If you ride in the city and drive 20mph and in traffic then modular is great. If you mostly do 40mph or more stick to a full face.
My 2 cents

Arai XD4 was my solution after going through a bunch of others over many years.
When one goes down on the pavement, gravel, rocks or dirt, even $1000 for the best helmet seems cheap. Convenient features are not significant if the helmet doesn't fit and protect properly.
Having been knocked out years ago when wearing an open face helmet, I want a solitary chin bar thank you.
There are a bunch of top end helmets, just buy the best one can afford that fits perfectly.
Aside, a buddy just bought an SD Mx helmet and it is an amazing piece of equipment I will be looking at when I replace my Arai.

I have a full face dirt style helmet - Bell, and a full face street helmet - KBC. Both are both DOT and Snell certified. I demand Snell because I want a helmet tested by someone other than whoever makes a profit selling it.

After getting my first full coverage hat in '72 when they first started coming out ,I didn't bust my mouth and nose anymore when going down racing scrambles, flat track and motox. Since then, I've had many many helmets through out my near 450,000 miles of roaming the country , all full face. Due to the heat down here, and staying local now, I decided to order a 3/4 coverage hat with a moveable face shield . Course it was a HJC as that's all I've been wearing for the last 20 years or so. Just like the way they fit my head. Very pleased with the purchase after just one 60 mile back road ride in mid '90F weather. Much cooler than my other 3 full face hats I presently wear. .

As a follow up to my rant about helmets, let me add this. Today here in West Texas, it was a hundred and nine degrees. I am confused by the tabs on the helmets that allow air to filter in to cool you off. Do any of those really work?
Eddie
P.S. to those of you up north who might be gloating about your riding season, please consider you this, yes, the summers are miserable here. But, in the winter, we have glorious riding weather.

Love my Arai XD3 (they make an XD4 now). It has a visor that does a great job blocking the sun, especially on my commutes to and from work riding east in the morning and west in the evening. The visor vibrates a little at extreme highway speed, but it's tolerable. I wear glasses and it really keeps the glare to a minimum. DOT And SNELL approved.

helmet thread,....... nklr-ish
My last LD trip along the N. Dakota / Montana border about 10 miles from Canada was the hottest day of my trip starting from SW Louisiana to Iowa along the West side of the MIss River to the Mo River then across through to the Dakotas to Glacier park then down though Co, NMex and eventually back to SW La. I was 102 F temps up there for most the afternoon. My last Bandit ride in SW La, I was coming into little towns where with the traffic and city heating many of the city temps were from 105 to a high of 110. Such is life in the Deep South.
