Listers,
Yesterday I sent a message about fuel delivery from a KLR650. I wrote at
one point we could call it three gallons a minute. What I meant was one
gallon in three minutes. : )
So let's correct the fuel delivery RevMaaatin and I measured to one
gallon in three minutes.
The error is entirely mine.
Best,

Mine does one litre/one US quart per minute on reserve with vacuum on the petcock (engine not running). I found that the diaphragm is leaking although wasn't a month ago when last checked. Don't know how to post a photo here but did on KLR650.net if of interest.
I recommend checking to see if the diaphragm is leaking be on everyone's maintenance list for several times per year.
I made a block out plate to allow the diaphragm to be removed and rechecked flow which was the same.
Both times on reserve although normal position flows the same.
FWIW, I see an increasing number of inlet screens which have built up deposits on the "wires" this can restrict the flow to a small trickle and is one reason to test the flow rate at least once per year. Jeff's attempt to obtain comparisons is, as usual, well considered. I usually just insure that the flow rate with low fuel is two or three times what the engine can use and consider that, "good enough" some comparison data is better.

Usually my old ride runs like a Swiss watch. However, when it's very hot, 90 plus, and I'm forced to use off-brand gas it might sputter and even miss. Engaging the enricher gets me down the road. A knowledgeable auto tech opinioned that the gas might be literally boiling. I wonder if my diaphragm is in less that ideal condition ?

I've got the gravity-feed mod, and my '99 flows only a gallon in five minutes. I didn't think to test it before switched from vacuum. I had my high-rpm miss problem before the switch, and I still have it (lucky me).

If it was closed does opening it allow an increased flow rate? Either way a gallon in five minutes is 12 gallons an hour. At 50 mpg that would suggest you are getting enough fuel to go 600 mph. : ) Best,

Fuel cap closed. Didn't think to try it with cap open, since I don't (usually) ride with it open. I was hoping for a clue to my 5000 rpm missing problem, but so far no luck.

I think Jeff's thoughts are.
Open or closed should, be about the same, start with a full tank, (less air in tank) And test a 3-4 gallons if it starts to slow after 1-2+ then your vent is not allowing air to pass threw properly.
Another test is. 1/3 -1/2 Take a test run, when it happens, (STOP) open and close the cap allowing air in test again.
if it takes awhile to miss, then your vent is plugged up. (hard to pull air into TANK, like a finger over a straw as "kids" (& grandpas) do. water (gas) vacuum trapped

Right, but I am trying for a speed record, and need more!

If it was closed does opening it allow an increased flow rate? Either way a gallon in five minutes is 12 gallons an hour. At 50 mpg that would suggest you are getting enough fuel to go 600 mph. : ) Best, Jeff Saline The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650 . . . . . . . . ____________________________________________________________ The #1 Worst Carb Ever? Click to Learn #1 Carb that Kills Your Blood Sugar (Don't Eat This!) If it misses at high RPM, I'd be looking for an electrical problem. If it won't GO to 5000 RPM, I'd be looking for carburation, but if it gets there and misses, I'd think electric first. Plug, plug wire, coil, primary connection to coil, wire from pickup, that sort of thing.
In the ancient old, old days, you could put the ignition system on an oscilloscope (I know, apparently nobody does this any more) and look at the waveforms of the ignition system and help to find problems, primary or secondary. Or was this in a dream?
Anyway, if you can find someone with such old fashioned equipment, that might help to pin down the problem.

Fuel cap closed. Didn't think to try it with cap open, since I don't (usually) ride with it open. I was hoping for a clue to my 5000 rpm missing problem, but so far no luck.On 6/7/2014 9:05 PM, jwflower53@... [DSN_KLR650] wrote:

Once had a float needle that would not flow enough fuel to run at 60 mph for more that a few minutes and then the bowl would go dry. Needle tip looked great and resetting the needle higher only got me bowl overflow issues. Got back home and rebuilt the carb including new diaphragm/slide but not he needle. Still ran out of go until the needle was replaced.
2 cents, please?
Best regards,
Don M
