Fred- Made it home but on 4 wheels (rental van) instead of 2. The countershaft bearing disintegrated in Flagstaff. Chain slack? And I really thought I was following conventional wisdom (and Kawasaki spec) with my adjustment regimen. It seems that the lesson is looser is better. Live and learn. Now if I only live long enough to do all my learning. Looking for a used engine now since I am really pleased with the way the KLR worked for me on this trip and I want to keep it going. Sorry to hear your trip ended with twice as many wheels. Chain adjustment is one of those things that commonly gets done wrong or not at all. Even a 1/8 to 1/4 turn on your adjustment can make the difference between too tight and just right. You also need to check that your chain has about 1 to 1 1/2 freeplay at several points on your chain. Chains and sprockets will wear differently at different places, so it is best to check the freeplay at 3 or 4 spots, as one tight spot can ruin a chain in short order. You should be able to find a complete engine as I see them listed from time to time. Hope you get your KLR back running soon. Fred
