doohickey spring end

Post by mark ward » Thu May 29, 2014 11:48 am

Are you SURE, the D.H. was cracked? I talked to a guy a few days ago that said, He has never heard of one actually  breaking.  NOTE: of all the bikes he said he has owned, he did NOT mention a KLR. I just love, (SARCASM) "EXPERTS" WITH NO ACTUAL HANDS ON EXPERIENCE. On Thursday, May 29, 2014 11:59 AM, "Jeff Saline salinej1@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

doohickey spring end

Post by John Biccum » Thu May 29, 2014 1:18 pm

Paul you SHOULD have a magnetic drain plug.  But don't expect to find the end of your spring there . More likely that the end of the spring will be in the oil strainer screen, see photo: http://johnbiccum.smugmug.com/Motorcycl ... &k=NgKtn2W From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: 5/ 29/ 2014 8:57 To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com; pwhatfourever@... That is what said Eagle Mike said as well. At some point, I will take off that cover and have a look.   Thanks,   Paul From: "Jeff Saline salinej1@... Doohickey was cracked and spring was broken but still attached on one end... The other end just the loop was gone. I'm ordering a magnetic drain plug. doohickey spring end

Yes, I am positive the doohicky is indeed cracked. I have a close up pic on my camera. ;-) Now attached. Not the best image, neither is my life, but its all I got! :-) You should be able to see the cracked/broken spot on the right side of the doohickey adjustment slot, toward top of photo. doohickey spring end

Post by Paul Whatley » Thu May 29, 2014 1:35 pm

Thanks, John.   Getting the plug and will check the strainer too. Chances are I will need to get a gasket. Avoided using the ones in Mikes kit especially since I didn't have to remove the inside case.   Paul From: John Biccum To: "DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com>; Jeff Saline ; "pwhatfourever@..." Nomad59, I have more than 10 broken Balancer Lever Adjusters in my possession. Both the old style, pre-2007 and the new, upgraded sintered metal ones in the post-2007 models. A majority of the pre-07 s were bad welds, but I have two that the outer portion of the adjuster was totally missing. I replaced my first doohickey in 2001 and I have sponsored 30 or so Tech Days at my office/shop. I think that I qualify as somewhat experienced, although not as experienced as some, Jeff Saline comes easily to mind.

doohickey spring end

Post by GMac999 » Thu May 29, 2014 2:56 pm

When I got my '95 the first thing I did was change the doohickey. The previous owner had never adjusted it. When I pulled the cover off and loosened the bolt, it fell off. It had split in half where it goes around the shaft. doohickey spring end

Post by mark ward » Thu May 29, 2014 3:54 pm

OH I wasn't questioning you, it was total sarcasm towards the guy that said NEVER, yet also never said he has ever had a KLR., and others like him. with NO experience, yet have lots of OPINIONS, they believe is KNOWLEDGE.  I told him, I have talked to people THAT HAVE A KLR all the time, that did have a bad D.H. My Doo was ok but the spring was shot. On Thursday, May 29, 2014 3:56 PM, "'GMac999' gmac999@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:
