caution! battery tender? or charger?

Post by mark ward » Fri Feb 28, 2014 3:04 pm

I have seen several "threads" of people talking about short battery life.
Some people use Battery CHARGERS as TENDERS.
DON'T
Even 1-3 amps CAN KILL......your battery. (by OVER charging)
Tenders MAINTAIN, and are Automatic.
A TENDER/MAITAINER SHUTS OFF, when the battery is charged.
(WHEN WORKING PROPERLY.)
CHARGERS, (many) ARE JUST THAT, THEY CHARGE, AND WILL OVER CHARGE, DESTROYING A GOOD BATTERY.
Then SOME!!!! are Both in one.

caution! battery tender? or charger?

You very much nailed that issue, Mark!

An additional caution, IME, is not to trust a battery tender either. I strongly recommend monitoring with a voltmeter, at least from time to time.

Even better, IME, is to clip one of the EBay LED voltmeters to the tender clips so that one can see the voltage when passing by.

I recently had a battery tender cook a new battery.....
