dumped the bike - 9/21/12
Red KLR 650A 2006 - 26,500 miles
On 9/21/12 I was rounding a curve on an unfamiliar 2-lane blacktop road and hit some gravel - destination, the nearest ditch. No structural damage unless you include the twisted handlebars, and my bruised left side. But it took out the windshield, fairing, tail hardcase, shift lever and left side bodywork. The Nerf bars and fork brace did their job absorbing the brunt of the body blow.
It was rideable, so I took it home and to the nearest Kawasaki dealership the next weekend. The insurer was fair and the overall work by the dealership was decent. 9 weeks and $1200 later, the bike is rideable again.
The dealership missed the left handguard and the broken support tab on the left side radiator shroud, so the insurance company didn't pay for those. The dealership was decent about the left handguard and gave it to me at cost. The new handlebars were way too high so I had to adjust them
I was able to fabricate a replacement for the left side radiator shroud bracket. That and remounting a slightly scuffed right side shroud saved me $200. Thank God for cheap tupperware plastic. An 2008+ model would've run $1K more. New Nerf bars are in place.
The replacement JC Whitney tail hardcase was their current discount model ($45). It fits but is of significantly less quality than the prior model (medium size) and took some persuasion to get on the tail bracket. It looks better than the prior model but dependng on next summmmer's experience it might get replaced. IMHO stick with the current non-discount model.
I missed the entire fall riding season. Last ride out was this past weekend felt a little strange - a rare 60 degree December Sunday with damp roads. Looking forward to adding some miles next spring.

Hmm, my KLR sustained some damage a while back that was also covered by insurance. Except for the amount, just a bit more than your $1200 bucks, our incidents had almost no similarities.
My bike was knocked over in the parking lot at work.
The damage:
Givi E21 - scuffed to match the one on the other side.
Acerbis Rally Pro -scuffed to match the other side.
Front fender - scuffed
LH fork leg - scratched by car's bumper.
Arai XD, 7 years old - chip in paint.
Even though I told him I didn't intend to replace anything, the adjuster gave me full retail on a new set of bags, new set of bark busters, new fender. new fork leg, plus labor to replace it, and a new helmet. I got a good price, under $400, and didn't ding him for full retail on the Arai. Neither did I hit him up for labor on the parts I wasn't going to replace. It was a win-win. The adjuster got off cheap, and I had 800 bucks in my pocket, which I spent foolishly, except for a new chain and sprocket set.

My KLR has been knocked over twice. The first was a couple months after bought. The guy that hit it came to me at the Marina where it happened and gave me his insurance info. They paid off like gangbusters....something like about $1000 if I remember correctly which kept Fred of Moab busy for a bit. The second time was at a restaurant and they drove off leaving me with a broken windshield and no money.
I knocked my Concours over in my driveway. That plastic was expensive out of pocket.
Riding directly into the sun home one day on the Concours, I kid hit me from behind knocking a side bag off (could have been my leg). The bag was the most serious damage as it was cracked up on the side next to the wheel. The kids insurance paid me about $1800.... But I fixed everything for about $200 myself. I found some great epoxy they use to fix plastic car bumpers with at a store that sells auto paint to paint and body workers that fixed it gut enough. The motorcycle dealer that gave the $1800 estimate was pissed I didn't let them fix it. Oh well.
Driving my wife to the airport in her Lexus for a business trip about 3 weeks ago into the morning sun again, we got hit from behind by an undocumented worker illegal....with no drivers license. But....evidently the car was either his wife or girlfriend (she showed up a few minutes later) and she has State Farm. The car is being repaired....cross your fingers State Farm pays.
Moral of this story, fix what you can yourself, don't ride or drive into morning or evening sun, and don't drive your wife's Lexus. Watch where you park. Maybe illegals should get drivers license so they can get insurance (but a lot probably won't). The guy was probably on the phone or texting as we were dead stopped for a red light and he ran right over us. I can't believe I ride motorcycles with car drivers these days.

A news release said aprox 35% of "LEGAL" drivers do NOT have insurance.
And figure the numbers are higher with the bad Economy.

Errr....we have more than a few.....that are not legal in Tejas. Great guys if you need tile work, yards mowed, carpet laid, hedges trimmed, patios built, cars painted......but.....wish they would watch where they are going and have insurance ( both car and medical). The complexities of modren America.
Oh and when they get a little flush with cash and open a resturante, muy primo el Goodo.

I got "run off the road" (she was on my side of a dirt road) by an
uninsured driver. My insurance gave up trying to collect as soon as
they found out she had no insurance and that was that. They didn't even
report her.
