oiling chain - rain

Post by snowcrash007 » Wed Oct 03, 2012 11:30 am

If I am riding home in the rain, should I oil the chain when I get home or wait until morning when the chain will be dry? Not sure how effective it is oiling a wet chain, but I just got a new one and want to make it last. Thanks Crash

You can displace the water with WD-40 (you should clean it anyway, right?), then oil/grease/wax to your heart's content. -Jeff Khoury

WD-40, lots of it then do nothing else. Bogdan, who supports hope and chains. Better to use the WD-40 to remove the water and the inevitable crud attached to the chain wax. Bogdan, who believes in the efficacy of bikini wax but not chain wax.

I HATE, Chain Wax, It collects and holds the sand ect. to/in the chain. (then, Hard to clean off.) Look at some of the stuff that miss's the chain and TRY to wipe it off with your finger.

I seem to have a slight leak in my front sprocket seal. This lubes my chain perfectly. What a system! Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

I admit that as I admired his skill I also thought, "Texas's tax dollars at work." It's a pretty unlikely real-world scenario that renders this skill necessary, but it may keep him safer on the job.
