I haven't ridden that particular stretch but have driven along the border in Texas and Arizona. What I have seen is the road is paved but the border patrol has dirt roads that parallel the highway. Most of the time it's right along side the highway. Again that has been my exp. Not sure it's that way all the way to Cal or not but see no reason it's not. Also not sure the legality of riding on their roads but I guess you could call and find out. Gary Souderton, Pa. DuhBro gotta go To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com From: michaelkoren90@... Mark Sampson (bigdogadventures.com) has ridden a lot of that country. I suppose a lot of others have, too, but he has written about it. You ought to be able to find it on his web site. It is three or four years old, and is a very good report on the WR250R as well.

I have spent a lot of time along the Texas coast especially around Corpus Christi when I used to sailboard. I don't know if you are intending to ride the barrier islands (Padre Island) but you can't (I don't think) ride Padre all the way to South Padre from Corpus because of cuts in the Island but you can go quite a ways. Plenty of deep sand practice (heh). Be sure and take a large amount of WD-40 and keep it covered in it as the salt air and spray will quickly turn it into a rust bucket. I have also driven and road quite a bit along the Texas border which you have to be careful with because of all the drug war stuff going on there. The Big Bend area is great especially the gravel river road in the park and the paved road from Lajitas to Riudosa which is as far as I have been. You can take the road from there to Marfa through Pinto Canyon which is gravel half the way (great ride). I am not sure if you can get past Candellera (spelling may be wrong). Not sure if the road continues to El Paso area. Take a gun (heh). South of all this area from Lake Almstead to Langtry to Sanderson is good desert scenery along the river but it is paved. I don't think I would go from Matamores to Laredo to Acunia right now because of the drug stuff going on. Criswell Sent from my iPad

Big Bend is a great area. I would question goin out there in the summer though. Not sure and can be wrong but I think the National Park is closed for a period in the summer. If you go there be prepared. There isn't much at all there, not even radio. It is way out in no where. Very few services, get stuff when you see it. If you want to be alone that's a good place. Many years ago, on my '95 BMW R11GS, I made the mistake of going there in June. It was like, 102 in the shade. A girl at the store told me it was in the 110s last week. I told her I was glad they were having a cool spell this week. ;-) After that, That area is a Winter Trip. ;-) Andy in Louisiana Hot here also.

Early March is pretty nice in Big Bend, the only time of year I have been there. The last time, we rode Black Gap Road, which has a couple of tricky spots; I think one of our party biffed in there. In any case, when we regrouped out on the highway, a park ranger stopped to ask if we had been in there, and if everybody got out all right. I can see how the ride could turn dangerous pretty quickly in summer heat.
