what idle speed should the klr be set at?

One consideration for a minimum idle speed might be the point where your charging system is able to maintain voltage on your battery. If you set it too low the battery discharges while you're idling for longer periods. Just keep it at a speed where your battery voltage is 12.8V or higher.

Last night I turned the idle thumb screw up a tad to about 1300-1400, sounded good. This morning I started on choke and warmed up and was off. At the first stop light the bike died. I had trouble starting it again, backed the adjustment I made down a bit, got to a gas station to put new gas in. Wouldn't start again. Backed the idle change off a bit more got it started went to work. No more stalls, idle about 1200 now. Before I made the idle adjustment It never stalled and always started one push.

Good Morning, If you screw it up too high, you begin to get out of the pilot circuit and into the transition/main circuit. These circuits are not designed for idle and will not draw enough vacuum through the choke circuit when cold starting. If you find you've only recently had to increase your idle speed, it may be time for sea foam or something similar. Your pilot circuit may be showing the beginnings of varnish build-up. Your bike will let you know this is the case by requiring small incremental increases in the idle screw. Best to clean it out now before it requires a disassembly and cleaning. -Jeff Khoury

It was working well, I just thought the idle should be a bit higher. I turned back 80% of the increase I did and it seems to be back to normal. Bike runs strong but I will plan on taking off the carb in the fall if all works out and doing a full clean then.

I would add SeaFoam to fuel now and ride it, other than the $8 or so for a can of SeaFoam, I add it to just about everything I got with a gas motor (or fuel cans for such) it also is a stabilizer for the fuel. Dooden A15 Green Ape
