mounting via left footpeg
Some say mounting the KLR650 as if it were a horse puts too much strain on
the sidestand and frame. It would be precarious at best with weight in the
top box, on soft or non-level ground etc. I'm a not-so-spritely 55 and when
the bike is well loaded I just do my best Karate Kid imitation and try and
get my right boot on, if not over, the saddle. A couple of hops on my left
leg and I'm mounted. I'm 5'10".
One reviewer long ago who was shorter than I, reported using the bicycle
technique to mount. Sidestand up, engine running and in 1st gear. Left boot
on the peg and let out the clutch. Swing right leg over as you pull away.
Never tried it myself. Sounds dangerous with a top box.

mounting via left footpeg
I never mount from the right side of a KLR. All my descriptions were of
mounting from the left side. The main concern with standing on either peg
when the side stand is down is that it will put excessive pressure on the
frame, bolt, and stand itself. The leverage multiplies the prying forces
down there. I hope someone from the group will echo my opinion. That said,
I've done it before as an experiment and I weigh just under 200 w/ gear. I
didn't like the way it felt. When I get too old to get my right leg over
the KLR with my left foot on the ground I'll switch to an XT500 or
equivalent and just slow down or stay off the highway. Bags and top boxes
always make mounting a challenge. Part of why I do it is to stay in shape
(somewhat).
I'm about to mount a TKC80 on the front with the Kenda K761 still back
there w/ 7k miles and counting. The A14 ('00) just rolled over 45k miles,
24k of which are mine since Dec. '07. 6k a year is not bad, just wish more
of it were exploring and long trips instead of commuting.

mounting via left footpeg
When I have a tall load on the back (probably taller than a top box) I
just kick my right leg up on the seat. Same way getting off - just drag
it back. Looks awkward, but no stress on the bike and a nice hamstring
stretch if you want to!

mounting via left footpeg
I am a proponent of the "karate kid" leg stretch to mount my KLR at aay time because the rear trunk does not allow me to swing my leg over. I have found that, as I did it more and more, I became more nimble at it.
