riding off road......alone

Post by mark ward » Wed Feb 08, 2012 9:29 am

I see and hear ALOT!! of guys saying they ride alone on back woods (etc) roads & trails (As I DO) and I would agree it's not "the smart thing" to do, (But I DO) I would advice my son to Nver do It, But if he does....... ........Take a Spot along. Works off satilite NOT Cell towers. You may not be able to hit the SOS button when passed-out, but for a few more dollars a YEAR, you can have TRACKING, and if someone back home checks on google maps and see's that you have not moved in a while, THEY CAN COME, OR CALL FOR HELP. I hit the OK button when plan to I stop more then 10 minutes to check things out. Plus they can see it still moving in an area, or zoom in on satilite on the map to see where I'm AT. A store, tourest/rest area, waterfalls etc., and see ......OH He's at walmart buying more OIL. LOL I feel alot safer with it in my pocket,

There are pro's and cons for sure. You ride with a group and you have someone there to help if you crash. But....group rides I have been on, someone starts pissing on the tree and starts going fast, usually faster than I want to go the older I get. The last group ride (street) there were all of us zooming on a 2 lane through southeastern Oklahoma at 80 -90 mph or more maybe. A guy in front of me fell hitting some gravel on one of the slower turns trashing the plastic on his bike. I went home early. They called me about another ride out in Big Bend TX. I didn't go with them as I had the previous year as I didn't like the speeds they were going on the River Road to Presideo. I was out there though during that time and was in Terlingua drinking beer on the front porch at the store. One of them crashed and died after hitting a car I heard. But last fall, a friend riding alone southwest of Austin Texas hit a deer (or really, the deer hit him). He was unconscious until being loaded on the care flight. I don't mind being Ricky the Racer on dirt bikes but get really uncomfortable doing the same on street bikes. What is the battery life on those things, anyway? Do they recharge? Any problem with that? Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

riding off road......alone

Post by ron criswell » Wed Feb 08, 2012 9:43 am

I have ridden dirt bikes alone a lot. Long before Spot, GPS, cell phones with nothing bad happening. I guess you have to have confidence in your ability. I wasn't just putting around either. I remember one cold February day, freezing rain and sleet was coming down. I had cabin fever bad. I took my Penton off to my favorite trails. One or two pickups in the parking area but never saw anybody. I had great fun zipping around on sleet packed trails.....with no one around. It did dawn on me that maybe this wasn't the best idea at 23 degrees, buy hey, I was in my mid twenties and everybody knows you are invincible at that age. The only time I have broken a bone (twice) others were around. Criswell Sent from my iPad

riding off road......alone

Post by mark ward » Wed Feb 08, 2012 12:04 pm

I need to do a controled test. They call for Lithium batteries, & I buy, Energizer ultimate Lithium. (AAA) They have lasted me a about week, BUT I forget to turn the unit off at night, and sometimes at all. so next time I go to get it out of my riding jacket, OOPS I plan on doing a controled test with Regular (CHEAP ASS) .30cent each, energizer, duracell etc. And good rechargables. (Spot says do NOT use rechargables, voltage may vary) some on the web say they have used recharged with good success.

for sale - complete eagle engineering doohickey kit for a klr 650-a

Post by Stu » Sun Feb 12, 2012 4:18 pm

I have been a member of this forum for years and no longer have any KLR650's left. I always appreciated reading all of the tips and other postings. They were of great value when I was modifying my KLR's. I have some left over parts from one of my project bikes that I sold before doing many of the mods. The buyer didn't want any of the parts so they sat i a box on my basement shelf. Second up is a complete Eagle Engineering doohickey kit for a KLR 650-A. The full kit includes: lever, (2) extension springs, rotor bolt, inner and outer gasket, rotor puller, rotor holder wrench. To buy today would be $124.95 w/o shipping. I will sell for $84.95 plus $11.35 priority mail shipping. I can send pictures on request. Please e-mail me at crew696@... if interested.

I think that if you check the fine print, most rechargeables are 1.2 V each. Non-rechargeables are 1.5 V, as are Alkaline rechargeables. Not much difference for one, but four can only deliver 5 V, not the 6 V that you can get from the ordinary ones. That 5V is already down 16% from the others, before you ask them to get out of bed. Just a thought. DC DC
