No one knows why the stock piston cracked. Detonation is typically a suspect but no sign of detonation was found. The area where the piston cracked has some porosity, that could have been a factor. I was running high speeds at high elevation with a high load when it happened. I rode the bike home (800+ miles!) adding a total of more than 8 quarts of oil. I'd stop every 100 miles or so to add oil. The piece of broken piston was trapped between the rings and did no damage. The bore was scratch free.
