I put one of the 90 plastic see-through fuel filters on, because I'm farkle-mad. When the engine started sputtering at the usual 215 miles, I reached down and flipped to Reserve. Instead of coming back on like it used to, it sputtered some more and died. I coasted over, scratched my head, realized I hadn't brought my cell phone, started fantasizing about the beautiful, intelligent, sympathetic, motorcycle-riding, single, lonely blonde who must live in the nearest house. Flipped the lever back to On, cranked it: no start. Flipped back to Reserve, cranked it, started right up. I guess that blonde wasn't The One.
I'll try another tankful, take off the filter if it happens again. I like the extra safety of a filter, wanted a metal, cleanable one (I said I was farkle-happy), but couldn't find one that would fit. Just as well, maybe. I might try one of those tiny disk-shaped ones; maybe the right angle turn impedes fuel flow. -JWF

thumbs down on fuel filter?
I'd like to know a little about adding Filters on a KLR. I have one on my Concours, but the Connie is fairly fussy about fuel flow and some filters just plain don't work. Anyone out there care to share KLR fuel filter successes?

thumbs down on fuel filter?
There is a clear plastic filter with (I think) a sintered bronze filter
element in it. Looks like a closed funnel with a barb out each end. Google
'motorcycle fuel filter' images and you should see one (the link was huge!)

Suggestion: Is your choke thingy (enrichener) working? It's all the way to the ~left~ ?
Answer: Yep, the choke level is full to the left, and seems to be working OK.
Suggestion: How's the air filter look?
Answer: To check the air filter is my next move, AFTER, I let a can of Seafoam sit in the tank a fews days. I am lazy, so I go for the most easy fix first.
Suggestion: Watch the battery voltage after you start it. maybe it's dying.
Answer: The battery seems fine, it charged up really well, sounds strong.
Suggestion: Check that the clutch and kick-stand , and neutral lockouts are not killing
it somehow.
Answer: Yep, did that, if the kick-stand kill (when down at start up) kills the bike like the kill switch does. In this case, it starts up, then quickly dies.
Bingo: Running a tankfull or two through it with Seafoam should fix it , if its
just varnish build up on the carb jets.
I suspect varnish on the carb jets, but, it also seems to quickly starve for gas as soon as it starts?
I'll let you all know how it all goes.
