mich. to seatle trip???

Post by mark ward » Sun Sep 04, 2011 5:39 pm

Hey all Leaving tue's morning taking the ferry to Milwakee, over to 35 to ride the sweeps along the river north, across the top of the U.S.A. (highway 2?) then start heading to Road to the sun, in Glazier nat. park, then seatle. Besides that I am winging it. Anyone know, of any Unique places that are must see or must eat at, clean cheap motels, campgrounds, places to pitch the tent a night, etc. Thanks Mark (W. Mich.) (klr650) paris hilton skin ointment?

The Rotax engines used in the big KTMs and the CanAm Spyder, etc. are dry sumps. The DL is a wet sump as well, but I think it's just built to a little tighter tolerances. I have an '09 KLR and while it doesn't burn ridiculous amounts of oil, if I flog it on the highway it consumes oil. I think there's a couple of reasons for this, and I think part of it is blow-by, which would make the oil darken faster. I just don't think the cylinder/bore fit is a very good one when compared to other bikes, especially after reading all the early'08 stories with the out-of-round cylinders. There could be some other design reasons for it as well, but I just never really worried about it and just figured "that's the way it is."

Jeff, I understand; it's because the engine oil 'shares duty' with the transmission. It is also my understanding that almost all {V-Twin 'Harley Types' excepted} modern MC's are 'wet sump' and have the same characteristic. In my experience, almost any oil darkens almost immediately in my KLR. In the DL, I have about 2,000 miles on the Mobil 1 5w-40 and it's still has a nice, golden hue. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron Magen" To: "DSN KLR650" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Sunday, September 4, 2011 5:24:35 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: (klr650) Paris Hilton skin ointment? Posted by: "Jeff Khoury" jeff@... DsrtEgl Date: Sat Sep 3, 2011 2:30 pm ((PDT)) It was probably Royal Purple. It's good oil, but not THAT good. I don't know about the 'motorcycle specific' stuff, but I've found the 'regular Synthetic to be on par, or a bit cheaper, then Mobil 1. {'Advance Auto' and 'Pep Boys' in the Philly suburbs} In about another 200 miles I'm going to change BACK to SYN after using the Rotella 'dino' for the Top End job break-in. Was using Royal Purple, but may change to Mobil 1 so I can see how soon the oil 'darkens'.
