typical oil consumption?
My '09 KLR seems to vaporize oil, with 1/2 to one pint or so needed before just about every ride.
No pooled oil on garage floor; no oil leaks at all visible; the exhaust pipe does not seem to be particularly oily.
Is this normal? What is normal oil consumption?
This bike only has 500 miles on it so far. I've thought about ring seating, etc., but the lack of external indications has me perplexed.

My 09 does that same thing. Kawi stated the this was normal. This was after the dealership had me do a oil consumption test. Not happy with they're answer so I am save my money to do the 385 upgrade.

typical oil consumption?
I have an 04 with 33,000 miles. I put in Mobil 1 (5-30wt) 2400 miles ago(synthetic for the first time). Since then it has been using a quart every 1200 miles.
I am using 5-30wt because it was only thing left during the $4 qt sale last Xmas at Pep Boys. I do prefer thicker.
The clutch doesn't slip. No oil leaks. It has been a cool spring and so far summer here in LA.
I am going to leave the same 5-30wt in until I really roast it on a hot day; then change out to conventional 10-40. I FIGURE THE OIL CONSUMPTION RATE GIVES ME AN OIL CHANGE AUTOMATICALLY EVERY 3000 MILES!
And I do have the magnetic drain plug.
It does seem the 08s and 09s consume more oil. The early 08s were subject to a half assed recall.

Unless I do a lot of high-speed (80+ riding), my '09 consumes about a quart every 3,000 miles using Rotella T6 Synth in 5w-40

You could always put a few ounces of Lucas in there to thicken it a bit. I've used it in some bikes with worn cylinders and it doesn't hurt them a bit.

I don't like to mix stuff into synthetics...the whole idea i thought was specific/like molecules instead of hundreds of different ones as in dino
though I could start topping off with thicker mobil 1 but then that sort of mixing is a no no also I thought

left side cylinder head cover hold down bolt needed
I'm in need of one of the left side cylinder head cover hold down bolts,
part number 92001-1854. This bolt is one of two that holds down the left
side of the cylinder head cover.
The bolt needed is key number 92001A in this photo:

Does anybody have a spare one in their junk box? If so please contact me
off list.

(Here I am, replying to an oil thread ..)
You can mix any oils, synthetic with conventional, 5W-40 with 15W-50, etc.
They all exist peacefully with one another.

You cannot make a blanket statement that mixing oils or greases is OK.
If you mix synthetic 2 stroke oil with dino 2 stroke oil it turns to crud and your 2 stroke won't run right.
Same goes for some four stroke oils. Some bases are not compatible. Though I did read that modern 4 stroke synthetics aren't as likely to have compatibility problems with dino oils.
THIS IS WHY I ONLY BOTHERED WITH SYNTHETIC WHEN IT WAS ON SALE AT PEP BOYS FOR 4 DOLLARS A QT: In July 1996, Consumer Reports published the results of a two-year motor oil test involving a fleet of 75 New York taxi cabs and found NO NOTICEABLE ADVANTAGE of synthetic oil over regular mineral oil. In their article, they noted that "Big-city cabs don't see many cold start-ups or long periods of high-speed driving in extreme heat. But our test results relate to the most common type of severe service - stop-and-go city driving." According to their study, synthetic oil is "worth considering for extreme driving conditions: high ambient temperatures and high engine load, or very cold temperatures." [18]
Lithium grease isn't compatible with some other greases. I read somewhere that the blue waterproof grease is more likely compatible with other greases...
