kenda k761 final mileage report,"speed"!
Who the hell is doing 130 -135 on a freekin KLR even if it could go that fast,i suppose the test could have been done on a High end KTM or Beemer even so that would still be pushing it,we've been through the Kenda question before so I'm not even going to go there,just a thought.

I read a related account that found the 270's to be inadequate as a street tire. Apparently around 130-135 mph the heavier knobs on a fresh tire are severely stressed and on a hot day some knobs flew off. The resulting imbalance and vibration reportedly forced a reduction in cruising speed. While the source was impeachable, it is a report.
Off-road capabilities were not mentioned but in my experience, mostly off road, they are a good choice.
Wondering?

#ygrps-yiv-1940279709 p {margin:0;}I don't have any experience with the K270, but I do on the Shinko 244 which is a very similar tire. It says right on the sidewall that max speed is 75MPH, and they mean it.
I rode a set of them from LA to San Diego and back at a steady 80-85, and I'd lost two knobs by the time I returned. The tall, thin knobs on those tires just can't handle extended high-speed cruising. That's why I stick with the 761s for my general riding. They're H rated (130MPH) and with the stress loads and speeds at which I ride they hold up well. If you're a serious off-roader they will be insufficient in the really rough stuff but I think the vast majority of us do not exceed the capability of that tire.
I commute on my KLR - freeways and city streets every day, rain or shine. I do a lot of hard acceleration, braking, turning and frequently exceed 80MPH (If you've ever ridden in LA, you'll know why). For me, the really "off-road" type tires just don't cut the mustard. When I'm on the trail, it's mainly rock/dirt/sand fire roads, etc. and the K761s do just fine there. I just have to be careful if I'm whipping a quick turn or there's a lateral incline because the lack of aggressive side knobs makes them want to wash if I push it too hard. I just have to be deliberate in choosing my line and speed when on the trail.
If you want a more aggressive tire that can handle the weight and speed, the Metzeler Enduro 3 Sahara is a wonderful tire, but it's really effing expensive.

Should have known! "DAH" must be age don't pick up on things as quick i used to,"Apology's",i had a KLR keep up to me for a while when i was on a road trip on my Moto Guzzi Le Mans this summer up here in British Columbia Canada he was quite hard to shake for a while and i thought we were joined by some kind of energy field,but when i pressed the issue he did start to drop back aways.
We met later at some road works and i complemented him on his riding and told him i to had a KLR,he liked my Guzz to,i belive if i remember correctly he was from down your way,he had probably done the Alaska thing.

Stu, the posting was tongue-in-cheek. It was an attempt to expose the possible exaggeration of a rider who 'threw off knobs' from his Kenda 270's on the street. A lot like the postings we've seen where a KLR rider was 'schooling sport bike riders in the twisties'. Yeah, sure you did. . . . In your fantasy's.

Wondering? A dual sport tire should be able to handle both and the 270s don't. Jeffrey #3

kenda k761 final mileage report,"speed"!

~~~My 08' KLR wore 270's for a while. it's a good dual purpose (sport) tire front and rear but here in Fla. the front 270 has too many knobs so it doesn't do well as a steer tire in sugar sand, which we have a lot of where I tend to off road ride, so I replaced it with a Pirelli Pro FIM which is a very good sand tire, and it doesn't do too bad on pavement but I limited my speeds to 65 and under. I eventualy (before the front Pirelli) replaced the rear 270 with another kenda tire, a k257d, also more dirt oriented and not a tire to ride at speed on the pavement. I bought a Kenda trackmaster rear to replace that rear tire when it wore out but I sold the KLR before that happened I understand what water skier (Jeffry) is saying about the Kenda 271. It is more of a slab tire than the 270. Both tires were built for two different tasks. I also ran a new Pirelli Scorpion A/T for awhile on the rear of the KLR when the OE rear gave out arouynd 2300 miles, and rode the front OE tire till that wore out, with the Scorpion A/T rear. Not a bad combo for more on road than off road type of riding and the tires that did most of my high speed slab work with the KLR (rode to Barber's museum in B'Ham once and another event in LA with that pair, doing mostly slab)......yet aired down, boothe the oe front and Scorp A/T rear were decent when ridden off road The KTM 950A I bought 3rd hand last July was shod with 70/30 tires (Scorp A/T's) and would easily handle higher speeds if I wanted to ride those speeds on public roads (I don't/haven't) I've gotten that bike up to better than a 110 more than once but the time there was short lived as I don't care for road side intetrviews w/LEO's. The national speed limit is fine with me on the slab, and I don't ride the interstate often. The rear Scorp on my KTM I replaced with a 50/50 tire (Mefo Super Explorer) about a month or so ago and it will handle higher speeds but I bought it mainly beacuse I've been told it will do well in the sand and offer longevity. The front Scorp A/T is still on thee but will be coming off soon once my left leg heals. I injured that leg not riding but I haven't been able to walk well in a week. Here's the tire (sitting behind me in my office) that will be going on the front of my katoom- http://www.flickr.com/photos/26137108@N04/5061250483/sizes/l/in/photostream/ Another Pirelli but one made for a heavier bike. it's the Pirelli Rally front. It's more of a soft/intermediate (so I'm told) off road front that should stand up to some on road riding w/o wearing out quickly yet be able to steer in sugar sand. If you don't have sugar sand to negotiate, consider yourself lucky but if you do ride it, you need a front tire that will be able to steer your bike while riding in it (something w/o a lot of knobs). Obvioulsy, if you're going to ride an enduro motorcycle in sand even some of the time and don't want to crash, no matter what the motor displacement is, you'll need to run tires (especially in the front) that wont be suited to higher speeds, and that's what it comes down to (IMO) when deciding between the Kenda 761's and the Kenda 720's...on a KLR... at least that is the way I see it, but the Kenda 270 front didn't work in sand for me...too many lugs on that tire, but does work well off road in harder pack situations. You can air down a 270 front in Fla. suagr sand but there are better front KLR tires for that IMO. The Kenda 270 rear is probably the best 50/50 rear tire you can run on a KLR but I'm sure there are some here that have their own/other favorites. Most here that run the 270 use it because of cost. It's one of the lowest prioced tires that work on a KLR. What are they, like $50 a piece? I have to spend 3 X's that for a rear 50/50 tire on my katoom but that bike puts out 90 rear wheel HP, not 35, so the tires cost more for the rear If I ever ride another KLR (you never know=:-), I wont be riding on Kenda 761's, too slab oriented for my style of riding. I'm more of a casual on and off road rider so the 270 Kenda (rear) is a better fit for me. Again, for me, when i get off road, I want a set of tires that will ride off road and slab oriented tires wont do that for me (w/our sugar sand) Jake Reddick Fla. Ultimately the quest for KLR Nirvana is a solitary path. To know I must first not know. And in knowing know I know not.
