13 tooth road ride report

OK, I did it. I switched to a 13 tooth front sprocket. No change to the back sprocket. No change needed to the chain. I honestly can't tell the difference in 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Fourth seems to end earlier than before and I want to shift up from 5th, but there is no sixth. All in all, it's fine, even on the freeway. It's buzzier than before, and I'm riding at 70 instead of 80 (indicated) but that's acceptable. I got it up to 80, no problem, and it will redline in 5th, for sure. Acceleration on the freeway is great, too. Somebody said that would be the case, and it is. I actually can't tell any difference in first though, so any advantage on the trails remains to be seen. From what I can tell, it isn't low enough to really crawl. Man, I'd kill for a six speed, or even a two-speed primary. Heck, a REALLY wide ratio gearbox would be OK with me. IMS back in the day used to make a wide ratio gear set for the CR500.  If there were enough demand, a wide ratio gear set could be made for the KLR. I just plunked down nearly $1K for a new rear shock. Haven't heard nor found any reports on this unit so I'll be sure to post a review when I get it on the bike and get a few miles under it. I basically traded a running '93 KLR with a cracked engine case for this unit. [sold the bike at a yard sale for $1K] I hope to never need another shock in all my KLR years. da Vermonster

As I remember these gears from IMS were around $200 but this has been many years ago.  I would imagine today they would be twice that.
