hesitant idle?

Post by DTS » Fri Aug 20, 2010 3:14 pm

My 01 has been sitting quite a bit this year (don't ask) but I've been warming it up regularly to keep the battery up etc. I'm finding now that it isn't idling well without choking. It often dies when I open the throttle some but settles down some eventually. I'm thinking this is the result of sitting so much and old gas and that fresh gas and some serious riding time will likely sort it out. Other thoughts or advice? I haven't been posting much but still keep an eye on the tech discussion here. Appreciate any input. Thanks, Dale

~~~~I'm a firm believer in Sea Foam. Problem is though, chances are you wont have any in the tank when you allow the bike to set up (non use) If your fuel (in the main tank) is 5-6 months old I would drain the tank (discard old fuel) and fill with fresh gasoline treated with Sea Foam (follow can directions) then you want to drain the carb bowl. if you've never done this look for a phillips head screw on the lower part of the carb bowl. that screw opens the float bowl drain. worth mentioning, you should have a drain line for the fuel to flow from the carb bowl to under the bike. place a container for the fuel to drain into. If there is no fuel line leading the drained gas away from the bowl, fit one After draining the carb float bowl, close the drain screw and crank the motor (press starter button) until it starts. Not sure about your year of KLR but my 08' has a vacuum petcock which means the motor has to develop vaccum for the fuel to flow. the bowl will fill fast so several engine revolutions will get enough gas into the carb to make it fire If after all this (what I've outlined) and your idle is still problematic, more than likely your slow speed carb circuit is plugged with fuel varnish. Depending on how fast you want to rectify, you have several choices. 1)keep treating the fuel with sea foam which disolves fuel varnish (gum) or, 2)remove carberator for a thorough cleaning Jake Reddick Fla. The post about cleaning your pilot jet is probably what you need. BUT, how long has it been since you last set your valve clearances? Tight valves can affect your idle too, so you would do well to rule them out before chasing supposed carb problems.
hesitant idle?
Every spring I have 5-6 month old gas in my bike.  I just start it up and drive it.  If this problem didn't exist when you last rode it ie. before the long parked spell, I'd assume there is nothing very serious wrong with the bike and I'd just fill up the tank, add Sea Foam and go for a long ride; longer the better. Or, if you aren't going to use that bike, sell it.   To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com From: sh8knj8k@... Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2010 20:38:58 +0000 Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Hesitant Idle?
hesitant idle?
Post by dooden » Sat Aug 21, 2010 10:50 am
Before parking for winter I add Seafoam to my fuel and run it to get in all the lines. If you read the can its a stabilizer also... that Sta-bil I would'nt use to start a fire, seen it get even gummier than stale fuel. Do it to everything I got, lawn tractor, snow thrower, add to gas cans so 4 wheeler gets some too, my 2 stroke mix for weedeater and chainsaw. Not a paid spokesperson either, I have seen it work miracles on small engines. Dooden A15 Green Ape
carburator questions 2009 klr
Post by Don Montgomery » Sun Aug 22, 2010 12:51 pm
Have done the slide drill and washer +1 on that mod! Carb is easy to work on, getting to it is the biggest job. Rode over the high passes out of Ouray to Silverton, CO up to around 12.5K high with stock sprocket, lugged it a lot but it pulls like a mule. 14K feet up might be a little different but go as high as you can, you can coast down to richer O2 if you stall out :-))).
