carb cleaning

Post by rsanders30117 » Mon Jun 06, 2005 8:34 am

Mine is an A14 at 27K miles. I've done everything else to eliminate a periodic hesitation when cruising at a steady 60 m/h. I figure it wouldn't hurt to try cleaning the carburetor for the 1st time in its life. So how do I do this? 1. What's the easiest way to get the carburetor out? 2. How do you avoid breaking the enricher carburetor fitting? 3. Once out, is the cleaning procedure to blow carburetor solvent- cleaner through every obvious orifice?

I'd be mindful of carb cleaner on an intact carb. Sometimes slide diaphrams can react poorly , i.e. swell up or worse. Ditto the orings,etc... eddie

Good points. But I think it would be almost impossible to get to the slide diaphragm from the drain hole on the bottom of the bowl, and I certainly would not spray so long that is puts more carb cleaner in than would just fill the bowl. I just think draining the carb, and giving it a 2 - 3 second blast of carb cleaner is a easy way to prevent varnish build up. I have been doing it about once a month for 4 summers with no ill effects. Rick A17

I always suspect the spark plug first, but that's just old-school thinking, hard to shake. Robert P. Wichert P.Eng +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ========================================================

From your basic description I'd suspect either choke or the throttle is stuck. Check the throttle body on the carb itself, you might have gotten something jammed in there or it just needs a blast of lube. If the throttle checks out ok (ie, it returns to rest both at the bars and on the carb itself), move on to the choke. Start by actuating the choke lever on the bars while looking at the cable where it enters the carb, you can usually see a little movement. If moving the choke lever has no effect on the idle, you may have to pull the carb and do a proper cleaning. da Vermonster
