Riding away from my house the other day i felt some pressure blowing up against my right leg. I looked down to discover my oil cap was missing. I doubled back and couldn't find it. Maybe it shot off on my last ride, I don't know. Couple of questions / thoughts.
I checked all of the Kawi dealers around the Pittsburgh area and not a one had a cap in stock.
A friend of mine from near State College, PA is sending me a spare w a gasket, but that will take a couple of days. Does anybody know what the metric size would be if i wanted to head down to the local hardware store to get a temporary plug?
Another question.. do any of you have the low profile / tamper free caps? Are they worth the $$$.
Final thoughts: I should have tightened that cap down gorilla tight and not pansy tight. After seeing how hard it is to find a replacement, maybe it would be a good to have a spare in hand.

oil filler cap
Hi Viz Guy,
EagleMike just started putting out a new oil cap.
To learn more check out post number 10 at:
http://www.klr650.net/forums/showthread.php?t=77206
Cost is $21.95 and it uses a 6mm hex to fit the hole. You should have a
6mm hex in your tool kit.
Maybe Jud will step in here with his story about carving a cap for a
DR??? while in Mexico.
Best,

oil filler cap
Twice, I've cranked a bike right after changing the oil and realized I
forgot to install the oil cap. Once, my DL1000 sprayed oil all over my
(covered, thankfully) SV650. The other time was at the bike shop and I hit
the tool rack and spent the next 20 min. wiping off $$$$ worth of Snap-on
tools that didn't belong to me.
Sooooo, given the large size of the KLR cap and it's "Valdez" potential, I
drilled a small hole in one end of the tang atop the cap and ran a small
piece of safety wire from it to the clutch cable end. Voila'! No more loose
or forgotten cap. I also place the cap and new wire next to the key
whenever I'm changing oil.
I keep a small length of wire on the bike, along with a multiplier tool for
occasions on a trip should I have to add oil and want to rewire it.

I figured Fred’s place was just the location to do the task. As usual there was a group hanging out and shooting the bull – kinda like the guys sitting in a barber shop watching hair being cut. I’ve never been an accomplished multi- tasker. Changing the oil and holding up my end of the conversation was obviously beyond my capabilities. I forgot to re-install the drain plug before I started pouring in the new oil. The onlookers were much amused. I still get teased about this occasionally. Bogdan
