Post by The Niswander's » Tue Mar 23, 2010 7:29 am

This is me first time trailering a motorcycle and i could use some tips, tech., ideas, etc...? I have a 09 KLR650 that I will have to trailer from time to time and I do not want to have it fall over, bend/break or damage the forks or suspension, etc..... What is the best way to tie it down? I will be using a wheel chock, but any other advise would be great including, diagrams, pics, links, ........ Thank you, Michael

trailering?

Post by Fred Hink » Tue Mar 23, 2010 9:07 am

Michael,   I have trailered bikes for thousands of miles and see all sorts of tie-down jobs that come into my shop.    Basically if you control the front of your bike, that is all you really need.  It all depends on how far you are going to trailer and how rough the roads might be.  If you are just going across town, the minimum would be two good quality tie downs on the handlebars pulled out at about the same angle as your front forks.  If your front wheel is in a wheel chock, it shouldn't move around.  Tie down the handlebars to compress the fork springs, this should keep the tie downs snug.  I grab the handlebars and give them a good tug back and forth to see if the tiedowns are going to stay tight.  I wouldn't worry about the rear of the bike if you are not going far or on rough roads.  If you are traveling across the country or over rough roads, you may want to opt for a second set of good tiedowns on the handlebars as a back up.  These should be angled to a different anchor but similar to the angle of the forks.  Be sure that your tiedowns are not touching anything since the movement of these straps against anything will eventually cut them and your bike will end up on it's side or sliding down the pavement.  I seen a dirt bike that was just about cut surgically in half by being dragged down the interstate in the dark.  You can tie the rear wheel so that it doesn't slide sideways or tie the wheel down  but compressing the rear suspension is not necessary.  Do not attach the tiedowns to any part of your frame.  The movement of your bike can break your frame if it is attached solidly.  Be sure that your side stand or center stand are not touching down since this solid connection could cause breakage too.   You can't go wrong with using good quality tie downs.  Buy the best and I would recommend Ancra.  The Red Snapper model has a clip that attaches the bottom hook where it can't come loose.  The top hook hardly ever will come loose it is the bottom that you have to be concerned about.  As long as your tiedowns stay tight, they should stay hooked.  You don't need those ratcheting type of tiedowns.  Just pull down on your handlebars by leaning your bike over against the opposite tiedown, while you are synching up the tiedown and that should be tight enough.  For long distance, I'd attach the ends of the tiedowns, so the don't beat the paint off your bike.  Some will attach the ends to your levers or grips or tie the end of the strap to itself.  Some will also tie the strap to itself so that it helps keep it from slipping.    After you have your bike tied down, I'd go take a shakedown test and see if anything has loosened or moved around before heading out on your trip.  I would check the straps for tightness every hour or so to be sure everything is ok.  Also if you trailer in the rain, a wet strap can slip or loosen to cause trouble, so check more frequently if your straps get wet.   If your bike has a fuel shut off valve, I'd turn off your fuel since the bouncing around of your bike on the trailer will over flow gas into your engine and past your rings, diluting your oil and this would be bad.   Everyone puts on their shoes differently.  So what works for me might not work for you.   Fred www.arrowheadmotorsports.com     From: nmdsr@... trailering?

I use a Canyon Dancer Bar Harness across the handlebars or 2 s-type hooks if the bar harness won't work. They also make short tie-down soft extensions so that you can loop them around without anything hard on the bars or triple tree. Also don't forget to tie up those loose ends after pulling down the bike They will flap around and hit the bike and scratch or chafe......I use duct tape or zip ties. Or you can tie and knot around itself.......   Bob  09 KLR + 07 FJR 1300     To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com From: nmdsr@... trailering?

Post by dooden » Tue Mar 23, 2010 9:28 am

Wheel Chock ? to hold the front wheel from moving I assume. Myself normally load the wheel into a corner to keep it from moving, then I have a chunk of 2x4 that fits between the top of the front wheel and is shaped to fit up into the fender to the bolts holding the fender on. Then I use 4 ratchet straps, one on each side of triple and clamp it down enough so the 2x4 indents the front tire. This is to make the front solid, but not compress the forks all the way, only compress about 2"~3" total. I have already replaced fork seals and I suspect from pre-2x4 days. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/2/9/202/4179/ITEM/PC-Racing-Fork-Support.aspx Something like that above link. Then I use the other two ratchet straps to secure the rear end normally just hook the subframe by the fender, move the wires as to not pinch of course. This is to steady the back end and keep it from bouncing around so not alot of downward force needed, also enough outward angle on the straps to keep it from moving side to side. Also I like to put another smaller piece of 2x4 under the kickstand to upright the bike and to keep the kickstand from denting truck bed/cutting up my rubber mat in truck. I have trucked / trailered alot of miles and never an issue for me. Dooden A15 Green Ape

trailering?

Post by Gary Thacker » Tue Mar 23, 2010 9:40 am

I suppose there are a ton of ways to keep the bike secure while on the road.  I may over do it just a bit but ....   When I trailer I use a wheel one of those things you drive the front wheel into and it holds it in place.  I use the soft straps around the handle bars  also.  I  now take D rings and put it through the soft straps and through a ring in the tiedown straps.  I also D ring at the bottom.  In other words the straps can not slip out like they can with  an S hook.  Also like stated tie the ends of the straps a couple of times to make sure they don't slip.  I don't trust S hooks  at all.  No matter how many bumps you hit the D rings will hold.  I have had S hooks come off.
