My vote is full-synthetic automotive oil.  I use either: Mobil 1 15W-50 or Castrol SynTech 20W-50 (Automotive oils are fine as long as they don't have Molybdenum friction modifiers).  In fact Mobil 1 and SynTech outperformed all motorcycle-specific oils in viscosity retention in a scientific study. (Donning flame-proof undies).

Mobil 1 15W-50 if I am going to go 2,000+ miles before changing it. Rotella T 15W-40 if I am going to change the oil in less than 2,000 miles. (Note: this oil is JASO MA certified) Jeff Khoury wrote:

And just what's wrong with olive oil? It is great on salads, on talapia, and in Season brand sardines. You can burn it in an oil lamp; in fact, the Temple Menorah was designed/intended to run on the purest olive oil. And, those of you into black powder muzzle-loading firearms will be hard pressed to find a better patch lube. If you happen to find a 150 year old recipe calling for "sweet oil", you need olive oil.... FWIW, but, no, I will not likely be replacing my KLR's oil with olive oil right away. Chuck F.
