metal prep and gasket removal test
Attachments :Walt, Bogdan, Listers,
I read Walts post right before heading out to the shop and thought I'd
try a quick test to compare Scotch-Brite to wire wheels.
The metal I used is aluminum, I'm guessing 6065 but I'm not sure. The
test coupon is about 3 by 10 inches and 1/8 inch thick.
I used a worn 8 inch steel wire wheel on a bench grinder, 2 1/2" (I
think) steel wire wheel in a die grinder, new medium 2" Roloc disc and a
new 4 by 8 or so inch purple Scotch-Brite hand pad.
Attached are three photos of the supplies and results.
Using my fingertips for judging surface finish I think the hand pad left
the smoothest finish. The roloc disc feels just slightly smoother than
the small wire wheel in the die grinder finish. The bench grinder wire
wheel is by far the roughest finish.
I tried to simulate the action I would hope to take if actually removing
gasket material from the metal. I think all finishes would work ok but
find I prefer the Scotch-Brite finishes. The hand pad certainly finishes
the metal the best but I think it would take the most work if used to
remove gasket material. It would put a nice finish on a surface after
using a more aggressive method to remove a stubborn gasket.
I think the wire wheels would be toughest to use on a narrow surface
(1/4-3/8") like found on the sealing surfaces of the cases of the KLR.
I'd be mostly concerned with rounding over the edges of the surfaces and
probably removing too much material too.
The photo showing the metal prep supplies on the left shows the die
grinder with the Roloc backing disc installed. In front of it are the
new disc on the left and a well used disc on the right. Next is the new
hand pad and then the wire wheel I used in the die grinder. When using
that wire wheel I held it at a sever angle so to almost be using the side
of the wheel for surface prep. I didn't have that option with the bench
mounted wire wheel as the tool rest and guard were in the way.
Hope this is helpful to folks as they decide what to try for their gasket
removal and metal prep operations.
Best,
