Catastrophic failures may be rare, but the consequences can be severe. The normal concept that risk equals likelihood times consequences yields at least a moderate risk. In other words, you will more than likely get away with not bothering, but if you're one of the unfortunate few, you might do more than your fair share of suffering. My 2007 doohickey failed at 9000 miles on the road in north Ontario, costing me a month and a half of my long-planned journey cross country and over to Europe. Repairs were done under warranty, but took a long time. Meanwhile, I paid car rental, long distance towing, air fare and hotel to the tune of almost three thousand dollars. That's not insignificant. The warranty replacement quadrant broke as well, but was fished out of the oil sump at around 20,000 miles 6 months later. It could easily have taken me out again.....but didn't. The bike, with Eagle Mike replacement doohickey and spring, is now at 61,000 miles and going strong. Mileage may vary....but don't blow the whole thing off just because some service manager tells you "We've never seen a problem," or "Sometimes people overtighten the adjuster," or whatever. enjoy, Mark (from Sucre, Bolivia, heading south in search of summer) |
