The cone serves to deflect glowing carbon particles aside, so that they travel to the space beside the "tweety tube", thus preventing them from immediately exiting the muffler. Peering in to the muffler after you've removed tweety, you can see the spark arrestor. It is a "cone type" not a "screen type". It essentially looks like the bottom of a soda can with "fan blade" type fins radiating out from the edges. This completely covers the inlet to the second chamber. A neat side-effect of this mod is visual. My brother was following me one night on a road trip. At freeway speeds, he said he could see the spark arrestor glowing red inside the muffler. cool, huh? The inner baffle of the second chamber is almost exactly 2" in diameter. Cutting the hole any larger than this is useless, as you would be unable to get the exit pipe in place, and you may chew up the inner perforated liner when the hole saw breaks through. 2" is definitely MAXIMUM. -Jeff Khoury

motor replacement instructions
Thanks to all who gave me ideas for finding a new motor. I located a motor in California that is on its way to me in Panama.
Does anyone know of any step-by-step instructions for replacing the entire motor/tranny unit? I feel capable of doing the work, but would hate to leave a step out or struggle with something that should be easy.
