This plagued me on my ride to/from Inuvik this summer. First the fuel was pouring out the T modded vent tube. We pulled the bowl thinking just trash holding the needle open and found nothing. Next we bent the float tab so it would shut off fuel at a lower level and were good for a day and then had fuel starvation issues, would run out of gas at speeds faster than 55 mph. In the end, I replaced the floats (no fuel in the floats themselves was ever evident )and the needle, which I suspected the whole time and things seem right again. I did shotgun the repair and put in new diaphram w/ slide and idle air valve thingy, drained the tank (no trash whatsoever and no rust, PTL) The fuel screens above the petcock were pristine and no trash evident in the in-line fuel filter. Must have been the float needle, I guess, but it was free to move like is should and no dings on the rubber tip. Don M Howdy, I get fuel leaking from the carb from an over-delivery to the carb-bowl from the tank. This seems to be due to a malfunctioning of the valve that controls the supply of fuel to the carb. It may be sticking open due to junk (dirt, bug legs, chunks of "varnish") and can be addressed by cleaning or sometimes just by draining the carb bowl. I have also noticed that this seems to happen in hot conditions and wonder if it is not caused by the fuel in the hose to the carb boiling and as it expands being forced into the carb. I wonder if anyone has tried some kind of heat shielding, even just sticking reflective tape on the fuel hose itself. This flooding of the carb with gas and the leakage of such gas has been associated with the engine refusing to idle and repeatedly stalling. Are you noticing this? A short term fix, for me, has just been to shut the petcock valve "off" for a minute to allow the valve to re-seat, maybe? In another vein, that was a great article on an analysis of causes of motorcycle accidents. Very informative. I noticed the engine speed was not dropping below about 1800 rpms at idle on my last ride. When I arrived at my destination and parked the bike I noticed a lot of fuel dripping from the bottom of the bike. The fuel flow stopped when I shut off the fuel valve, and at first glance there is no sign of leaking fuel lines. I trailered the bike home, and unfourtionatly we just got dumped on with snow, so I have not been able to take the bike apart yet. Any ideas? I had a similar problem years ago with a 1963 Ford Falcon, where a diaphragm cracked in the fuel pump, and it pumped the fuel out the side of the fuel pump, all over the engine block. Fourtionatly the hot exhaust manifold was on the other side.
