clutch lever freeeplay

Post by skc4seasons » Wed Nov 11, 2009 12:21 am

Just bought a Used (800 miles) 2009 KLR. I have 1300 miles on it now and am concerned about clutch wear. I puchased a factory Kawasaki manual and I beleive the clutch was properly adjusted when I bought the bike. I had about 3/8 to 1/2" of free play when I first bought it, but play has been slighlty increasing over the past 500 miles. Seems to have more play after I have been riding it for some distance. Most of the riding has been on the street and I have not been abusing the bike. Road it on the highway this weekend 50 miles at 75mph and got off the highway and got gas, when I left the station I noticed that I was pulling the lever in almost halfway to engage the clutch. When the engine cools after riding the freepllay decreses. Oil level in the sight glass with the engine off is at the upper mark. Any advice on what is going on would be greatly appreciated.

The new cable's likely stretching a bit. It'll settle down with usage. Mine did the same thing. Take up the slack at the engine and run the adjustment at the lever back in. Re: oil. If you drain the oil and change the filter, you will very likely see that it only takes about 2000ml (2 liters) to take the oil to near the top of the glass. That's 500ml shy of what it's supposed to hold. So, if you can still see even a small bubble at the top of the sight glass - engine hot, bike level and after a few minutes run down - it's actually low on oil. By 20%. Yikes! eddie PS: Pulling the lever in *disengages* the clutch. We're sure that's what you meant. ;-)

Hi! All bikes with cable-operated clutches have more free-play when the engine is warm than when cold. Adjust your cable free-play when the engine is cold. There should always be a bit of looseness at the lever, even dead cold. There are a lot of things like this about motorcycling you can learn from other riders. Your manual won't teach you those things. If you have a friend who rides and is not full of BS on other issues, ask that person to help you with stuff you need to know. Great guys and women, motorcyclists. Best to form real relationships with real people. You don't necessarily need a KLR-owning friend; a rider will do fine. I'd suggest one who washes his bike and doesn't rant about politics in inappropriate places. If the person has only ridden Harleys, smile and wave, and look elsewhere for qualified help. Good luck!
