up-graded stator , watt measure?

Post by John » Thu Nov 05, 2009 6:45 pm

Hi Group, I bought an up-graded stator from KLR650.COM. I can't remember if I bought a 250watt, 280watt, a 300watt or a 400 watt. Ya, I know, bad memory. I had the dealer put it in also. So, I contacted the supplier and they are currently searching for my paperwork. In the mean time, how could someone measure watts? Is there a watt meter? Or a way to measure how many watts my stator is making? John San Diego KLRBugeater@...

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> John, Any decent automotive shop should be able to load test the charging system. It's no different from an automotive charging system other than the components might look a bit different or be scattered around the bike. You take watts divided by volts to get amps. Or you could take amps times volts to get watts. The shop will get volts and amps at the same time when doing the load test. You might even be able to get an auto parts store to do the load test for free if you ask them nicely. You shouldn't run it inside the house. Carbon monoxide, you know.

Jeff: I was wondering how a load test is done. Would you attempt to 'pull' ever increasing amounts of electricity through a accessory outlet, etc? I guess you could be limited by the wire size you used to supply the outlet. I have an AC "Kill-A-Watt" meter in the house to measure 110 volt things and that is how it works but it is measuring the load not the supply. Or would you clip on to the battery wires and 'pull from there, then do your amps x volts = watts? Maybe the battery would influence that reading too. Seems like something good to know. Don R100, A6F

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> Don, The load will be too much for an accessory socket and wiring. You'll be using the heavy cable like the battery to starter and battery to ground cables. In very basic steps... The battery must be in good shape and fully charged. A load is attached to the battery terminals along with a voltmeter. This is a special machine and if you googled Vat-40 you might find a sample of one. A load sensor is attached to a battery cable. This sensor is now often an inductive pick up like used on modern timing lights. The vehicle is started and voltage read at the battery. The engine speed is increased to the rated area usually. The load is increased to see how much electrickery is being put out by the charging system. This is read in amps and at the same time you are watching volts. (Amps and volts have a neat relationship so you don't want high amps and low volts, you want them in the correct amounts. Might be 13.8 volts and 20 amps for a 280 watt charging system in very nice condition.) You normally don't leave the load on for more than 15 seconds. The load tester will have a duty cycle that you should not exceed. It might be 15 seconds on and 5 minutes off. The load gets hot and must be allowed to cool between uses. Return the engine speed to idle. Turn everything off and compare readings with the specs. Fix it if it's broken. You could use (carefully) car jumper cables from the battery to a test area on the floor next to the bike. Use the best Voltmeter connected directly at the battery terminals (Like a True RMS Reading DMM, Fluke). Not at the load end, at the battery in the bike. For loads I have used old car headlights. Measure the voltage vs a few RPM values for one (55 Watts or so). Then another headlight in parallel for 120W. Do this up to what you dare, maybe 4 bulbs (>200W). You can use hunks of 12 ga. house wire to parallel them. Leave load on just long enough to get readings. A couple extra people taking data and running the throttle really help things. I never throw away a headlight or bulb, if at least one filament is intact. Mike Crestline, Ca. It's getting cold around here. So I was looking at heated gloves, etc. How much load can I add to my stock system ? or...Watts the power rating of a stock stator ?? -- charlie
