oil consumption 2009 klr **correction**

Post by John Biccum » Wed Oct 21, 2009 10:00 am

Positive Crankcase Ventilation has been around since at least 1968, I had a PVC valve on a '68 Chev. It is not rocket science, the PVC valve is a simple one-way valve. On the KLR it allows a low resistance method of venting combustion fumes from the crankcase into the airbox. It serves to recycle these fumes. Since no air can enter the crankcase through the one way valve it prevents the crankcase from becoming pressurized. Pressurization of the crankcase is believed to be a contributing factor for oil consumption, particularly at higher engine speeds (higher crankcase pressures). Cary Aspy "KLR Cary" suggested the PVC valve should be installed when he put together the 685cc kit. My bike was the first KLR685 on the road and Cary fabricated a means of installing a PCV valve using vinyl tubing and elbow fittings. You can see this early prototype here: http://johnbiccum.smugmug.com/Motorcycl ... k#49977722_ w72sU This PVC valve was on my KLR685 until recently when it rotated slightly and was taken out by the shock. We know now that a PVC valve can be installed in line into the existing crankcase vent tube using just a pair of hose clamps to keep the valve in place. In the 30K miles my 685 kit has been in place it has burned zero oil, even at prolonged 5500RPM running. Maybe the PVC valve is a contributing factor, maybe not. It seems reasonable that a pressurized crankcase would contribute to oil consumption although I lack empirical data to prove that. The PVC valve mod is a near zero risk and near zero cost mod so you have little to lose. Why don't you try it and see if your oil consumption (if any) changes? Post by Jeff Khoury » Wed Oct 21, 2009 10:46 am

I know it sounds improbable, but I noticed a "seat of the pants" torque increase. Not so much top-end, but snappiness on the low-end. I did not mention anything to my brother, and when he rode it, he asked if I had done anything to the bike. My '09 doesn't consume hardly any oil in "around-town" riding, and if I take an all-day freeway trip (75mph+) it does consume some oil, but I have not measured the amount. The mod cost me $4.50 + 2 zip ties. It took quite literally 5 minutes to perform. I used the 2272 PCV Valve available at nearly any auto parts store. Make sure you install it the right direction. I can't see much risk at all in performing the mod. After all, you only stand to lose about 5 bucks and 5 minutes of your time, right? -Jeff Khoury Astatic Solutions, LLC.

So, I assume we want to let pressure out of the crankcase, but not back in? Doesn't that create a vaccuum under the piston on it's way up? My bike was the first KLR685 on the road and Cary fabricated a means of installing a PCV valve using vinyl tubing and elbow fittings. You can see this early prototype here: http://johnbiccum. smugmug.com/ Motorcycles/ KLR-Engine/ 1030345_WH34k# 49977722_ w72sU This PVC valve was on my KLR685 until recently when it rotated slightly and was taken out by the shock. Why don't you try it and see if your oil consumption (if any) changes? cough. I did not do the mod and had exactly the same results as Ross. revmaaatin.

oil consumption 2009 klr **correction**

Post by Rick McCauley » Thu Oct 22, 2009 8:26 am

I have no doubt at all about the pressure a 4" piston can create (3.93 for those that want to be picky). But I also know that it is capable of comparable amount of vaccuum. That makes me think there would be a power loss, not a power gain. Yes, one would assume that it would create a vacuum inside the crankcase. My personal conjecture is that the PCV valve is much more significant on a single than it is on multi-cylinder engines because the pressure waves inside the crankcase are much higher with only one giant piston moving up and down. In my reckoning, these large pressure waves probably contribute to oil either being blown past the rings or up the breather tube into the airbox. If you doubt the amount of pressure in the crankcase, just start the bike with the oil cap off... But what do I know? I'm not an engineer or anything. -Jeff Khoury

Doesn't that create a vaccuum under the piston on it's way up? You can see this early prototype here: http://johnbiccum. smugmug.com/ Motorcycles/ KLR-Engine/ 1030345_WH34k# 49977722_ w72sU This PVC valve was on my KLR685 until recently when it rotated slightly and was taken out by the shock.
