trail tech vapor and stock speedo/cluster
Ok, I thought I would give the trail Tech Vapor digital "computer" a try on my 2000 KLR650. I installed it all up, at least everything but the coolant temp sensor; I'll do it next weekend. My main thing is the discrepancy in speed. I think I have an accurate measurement for the front wheel now as the odo's for the trail tech and stock clusters match up really well, but speed wise I am off usually about 2-4 mph, as in the trail tech shows 2-4 mph less than the stock! I have read online that the stock one is inaccurate but forget which way it goes. I am going to try to use a gps to compare the two, I was just wondering what others think?
So far I do like the Vapor. It's back lit , digital, and has some nice options. Easy to read day/night, and once I am sure of its accuracy I can see not really looking at the stock one any more. I also am going to install the indicator dash, which adds 4 lights of my choice (turn, neutral, oil, high beams, it comes with many choices!).

That conforms with my experience using bicycle speedometers and GPS. The stock speedo is wild high, by about 8-10%.

Stock speedometers typically read faster than you're going. I believe
the manufacturers set the design point to read high, so as multiple
speedometers are made and their output varies due to manufacturing
tolerances the owner doesn't complain about getting a speeding ticket
due to an inaccurate speedo.
Speedos may also be set read a little fast so when you put a new tire on
(larger diameter 'cause it isn't worn down yet), the speedo doesn't
report you're going *slower* than you really are.
I'd use a GPS and adjust the Trail Tech until it agreed with the GPS.

My 2007 klr 650 reads 10 % higher than my Garmin 60 csx. My Trailtech Vapor on my converted XR400r is right on with the GPS. Just calibrate the Trailtech computer for tire O.D. The temp sensor works great on water cooled or air cooled engines with the right connecting sensor. Mark in Nevada. Check out the dual-sport RideReno200 Oct 3-4m

Thanks for alerting me to the existence of that speedo. My stock
speedo died a few months ago, and I haven't fixed it. I downloaded
the PDF instruction manual and am very interested. Do you have any
pics of it installed? Will it be damaged by rain?

No pictures yet, I'll try and remember to take some next weekend/chance I get. Good question as to what the weather will do to it? I wish I knew? Just looking at it, I think it may have some water resitant qualities, but I would e-mail them up and see if they have an answer for you!

Have not gotten the chance to calibrate it with a gps! But I did take a few pictures of it mounted last night! I added the water temp and that seems to work great! Just make sure you read the directions as to get it to look for the water temp after you install it you need to hold the left and mode buttons down for a few seconds. Still need to add the indicator dash lights, but I have them now and looks pretty streight
forward!
Have not had the chance to look into the computer's weather resitance but the connections are weather/water proof!
Hopefully this link works to get you to the pics http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DSN_KLR650/photos/album/1627776607/pic/list
If not they are in the groups photo's section , either look for them by my name navyboy65 or trail tech vapor!
Oh did the 16t front sproket upgrade, only rode a few miles but seem to like it!

fuel valve leak
Mine did the same thing. It appears to be a press fit. I just pressed it
back in until I felt a slight 'click' and it's been fine ever since.

traffic light I noticed that his bike was leaking fuel. He reached down and
touched the hose and the right angle peice came out in his hand. He zip
tied it back in and rode the rest of the way home without any leaking. Is
there a more permante fix for this or is a new valve the only way to go?
TIA.
