I know one uglier. The Victory Gold wing wannabe. It is so ugly, I
don'even want to know it's name. Do they really think wrapping a
motorcycle in swhoppy plastic will make it pretty? I hope Arlen Ness
wasn't involved in that one as he was in some of the others. They need
to look at most Ducatis if they want to create a pretty bike.
I'm not a fan of the Harley V Rod either. It seems like they couldn't
decide if they wanted to make a cruiser or sport bike.
Last but not least, that fat tired cruiser Suzuki is making. The name
escapse me on ugly bikes. I think the designer of the first Katanas
may have had a hand in that one.

Are you talking about the Suzuki M109?
I don't care for the looks of that one either , but I wouldn't call it ugly.
Buddy of mine had one. I rode it. That thing pulls like a nitrous tractor with a blower.
Mega Torque everywhere.

nklr i'm back ........... with questions.
I saw one of those 1200C's limp up to a rest stop a couple months ago. I
thought that someone had taken a BMW and made a "chopper" out of it. It was
smoking more than Cheech and Chong and dripping more oil than a vintage Euro
bike.
I looked at the guy getting off the bike in awe and asked him if he blew a
seal. "Nope, that's how she runs... they all leak like that"

nklr i'm back ........... with questions.
The one I worked on was a 2000 model year, I had to rebuild the clutch master cylinder with only 2400 miles on the bike. It would leak fluid out through the cap and the piston, dropping brake fluid on the left cylinder, and all over your gloves. After a couple of hours and a rebuild kit, and another to bleed, it worked ok.
The test ride was harrowing. The suspension was unbelievable garbage. The bumpy 405 was too much for it to take, It just felt like it was "wallowing" all over the place. I almost lost the whole bike when I hit a 12" piece of a 2x4 that was laying in the road. My KLR (and even the old Seca II) would have taken that with no problem, but it bottomed out... hard.
Then there was the disappointment at a 1200cc twin that only develops 61hp. 61... really??? My 17 year old air-cooled 600cc Yamaha puts out that much , and sounds better doing it.
I certainly hope this is not an example of BMW's quality. I've been lusting after an F800GS, but now I'm re-thinking that a bit.

I definetly understand. I have always liked the looks of the older Yamaha 650 Special.
Just happens to be one available locally, and it is so tempting, but we just paid our taxes, and filled our LP tank. I'm kinda broke.

To: "Rick McCauley" Date: Friday, September 11, 2009, 12:09 PM Well I'm kinda picky when it comes To the way bikes should look. They are basically an engine with wheels and the old Brit bike builders and Harley figured out just an engine with wheels could be and isbeautiful ........ if you don't foo it up. I own a nice looking plastic encased bike a Conourse but considering the hassel of rovi g the plastic to work on it, I suspect my next bike might be a naked. I think they just tried too hard on the Suzuki and the Victory to be modren. One thing Harley figured put was they have a basic look and a pretty engine and to not Foo with it. The old Brit bikes had some Real craftsmenship (on the outside not on the inside) of their bikes. The plastic on my Connie is nice on a col day ...... but it is expensive of you drop it. Sometimes I don't think real Motorcycle people design these things .... or they try to hard to ne modren. Criswell Sent from my iPhone On Sep 11, 2009, at 10:28 AM, Rick McCauley wrote: ok ok. Rick,
Be careful what you wish for. I had one of the last XS650s and really enjoyed it - I can't think of a more pleasant round-towner than that rumbly 650 Yamaha twin. Mag wheels, chrome fenders, clean swoop of the exhaust and a beautifully proportioned tank. The original buckhorns were quickly removed and replaced with a set of flat GS1100 bars and I rode the bike everywhere. Electric and kick start, she fired up easily, ran like a top and got 57 mpg in everyday riding.
However...
Although it had ample power to get around, in my experience it desperately needed a 6th gear for any significant highway running and a suspension upgrade to be stable under less than ideal conditions. Another disc up front would have been nice, and it seemed I was always having to snug up the chain (but back then I wasn't as able or interested in proper preventive maintenance so the chain was probably well worn).
I still keep watch for a nice one to come up for sale on the local Craigslist, but have no illusions as to its original capabilities. For the most part these old bikes are frozen in their time and either need love and understanding for what they are, or some meaningful updating to be as safe and irritation-free as more modern bikes of similar design and cost.
Steve
Miss my '82 CB750F and a few others, too.

I definetly understand. I have always liked the looks of the older Yamaha 650 Special. Just happens to be one available locally, and it is so tempting, but we just paid our taxes, and filled our LP tank. I'm kinda broke.

To: dsn_klr650@yahoogroups.com Date: Friday, September 11, 2009, 3:02 PM Rick, Be careful what you wish for. Steve Miss my '82 CB750F and a few others, too. ------------ - ---- Rick McCauley wrote: I definetly understand. I have always liked the looks of the older Yamaha 650 Special.
