This kinda drives me crazy (short putt). A school official for an area suburban city unfortunately got killed a few days ago while riding his Honda Gold Wing trike in South Dakota passing a truck. The newspaper keeps saying he was killed on a motorcycle. I don't consider a trike a motorcycle as it has one more wheel and doesn't lean. What do y'all think? Criswell

Depends on each states specific law but it's really a motorcycle! If you want to differentiate by being more specific it would be called a motortricycle and you ride a motorbicycle. Walt

Well the whole part of lumping it into the bike category is for wreck statistics makes probably our insurance go up. It doesn't drive like a motorcycle or handle like one and should be in another category. People read the paper and say another guy got killed on a dangerous motorcycle when to me they are not anything like a bike except the Gold Wing engine, forks and it is open like a bike. I would say in some cases they are more dangerous than a bike. criswell

(iirc) In the UK, three-wheeled cars were taxed differently than their four wheeled kin. The 3 wheelers were taxed like motorcycles. Magnum p.i. fans may remember Higgins driving an enclosed three wheeled car in an episode filmed in England. That car had two wheels in back and one up front. I can only guess the laws went back to the days of Morgan three wheelers {open topped cab, front engine with two wheels steering & one driven wheel in the back) + motorcycles with sidecars being more common,etc... I'm also guessing there's something at work in the lawbooks here in the US along those lines. www.killboy.com - the web site for the fellow that photographs folks driving & riding through Deal's Gap? He has taken photos of a GL1800 Gold Wing *quad* running through there. Yep. Two wheels up front - two wheels in back. I have no idea how it can be legal in all states without being registered as an auto. Moto engine or not, it's no longer a bike or a trike. eddie

A few years ago when I was first considering an Ariel Atom and waiting for the U.S. importer to get set up, the company was indicating that in some locations what designated a 'car' vs. 'motorcycle' was vehicle weight , and the number of wheels was not considered. At that time the 4-wheeled Ariel Atom was classified as a motorcycle in many areas overseas and expected to be the same here through many of the States. I can't say whether this is turned out to be the case or not as I lost interest when U.S. prices for the Ariel were announced. Steve

What about the Can-am Spyder ? 3 Wheels and Leans... ;-) I should know this, but a 3 wheeled bike/trike is a separate lics. here in the state of Illnios, Cycle endorsment covers the 3 wheeler, but the 3 wheel endorsment does NOT cover motorcycles. Dooden A15 Green Ape

I guess if the state licenses the trike as a motorcycle, then by law it is technically a motorcycle. Personally, I think they are no more a motorcycle than those homemade trikes with a VW engine in them. But if you're old and feeble, and and don't want to give up motorcycling, it is as close as you can get. I just got back from Branson, MO on vacation, where I saw something I have never seen before. A Gold Wing with training wheels. I am sure they are called outriggers by the manufacturer, but they look like training wheels to me. I couldn't help but grin. Rick A17

I just put those on a Honda Shadow to see if my wife would like it. She likes bikes but doesn't want to ride herself, if it gets used a couple times a year for hanging out at our downtown lakefront park, and a couple trips to the local diner car/bike nights it will be worth it to me. Dan

For a wife, OK I guess I can see it. But no way for me. I would go to a side car, or as a last resort, a trike conversion. I would rather fall down than ride with training wheels. Rick A17
