Has anyone had any experience with the LED tail lights? I am considering the one that Dual Star Sells, (http://www.dual-star.com/index2/Brand/Kawasaki/klr_650_led_taillight.htm) That seems like a lot of money; are they worth it? Are there any other suppliers, more inexpensive, maybe? Just wondering, Brent 2001 KLR 650

I have one, for about 3 years. Works perfect. It is at least as bright as the stock bulb, much more obnoxious when it is flashing, and uses a lot less power than the stock bulb. Perhaps only drawback is the usual LED problem of being rather directive on light output, meaning they are brighter looking straight on, whereas a light bulb gives off light 360 degrees. It does not cause any problems in this application. I don't know of another supplier, but haven't looked also. Jeff A20 In a message dated 7/10/2009 7:53:08 A.M. Ouch. I just looked at the price $85! I think I paid about $50 for mine 3 years ago. But it still seems like a nice piece. Jeff A20 In a message dated 7/10/2009 7:53:08 A.M. <><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Brent, I think Whitehorse Press sells one for about $45. I just got rid of my catalog so don't have a part number or contact info. On another list there is a thread about Dual-Star and the service folks are or aren't getting. Might be worth calling them and seeing if you can get through. I haven't had any experience with Dual-Star in about 5 years but I wasn't impressed with their service. The products were good when I finally got them. This appears to be the same unit that was marketed as the Brake! a while back. I seem to recall paying $80 - 85 for it three years ago. Certainly worth that to me if it helps keep me alive & out of the hospital. I think the mfr was Gizmomill, but I heard they are no longer in business. It works well and is definitely an attention getter on braking, as well as being more obvious than the stock taillight bulb in the taillight mode. I normally outfit all my bikes with Kisan products to modulate the headlight, pulsate the brakelight and turn the signal lamps into running lights. This unit is the one exception to that standard procedure. I bought one of these for my '06 KLR650 and it works great. Then I moved it to an '07 KLX250S after getting that. I had to relocate the support brackets slightly by drilling new holes in the PC board. I took it out of the KLX when I traded it for a Versys, so when I got my '09 KLR650, I tried it there. Fit perfect in the configuration I had modified it to for the KLX. The brackets are offset vertically, so it may work without modification in an '08-'09 just by flipping it 180 from how it mounts in the earlier KLRs. It is still working fine, as I expect it will for years to come. Dennis KD7CAC Scottsdale, AZ

I'm waiting for the shop to reorder some Hyperlites LED modules. Two blocks of eight very bright red LEDs connected to a flashing unit for an additional brake light makes for a great "be seen" setup. I once spotted a SV650 a couple of blocks ahead of me in traffic sporting a set of those. It really stood out. Then I had the realization that it was my friend Rhonda riding the SV that I sold her. Myself I took a small 2 LED marker light, took a small bracket, bolted it to it, drilled the rack at the back just above the taillight and wired the "extra" light to the brake circuit. Now when the brake goes on it goes from a single taillight to the taillight and a second light above it. BrightLites / Hyper Lights whatever they are called also sell some about the same size factor and are really bright. I used what I had and am happy with it. If I spent more time in traffic, I would consider either making it a light on both side of the rack or get something that can Flash a few times before going bright (brake light) them really get your attention when they flash a few times. Seen a HD with something like it but it flashed Red and Blue a couple flashes prior to going bright red and that REALLY got my attention. Legal to have a flashing Red and Blue ? dunno but if it saves your life and the LEO can be convinced it only flashes a couple flashes I bet most would'nt even care it had Blue on it. I just paid $50 for the KLR tail light conversion kit at http://www.whitehorsepress.com/product_info.php?products_id=5878 and am very pleased with it. It is (I think) very much brighter than stock, and extremely attention-getting. It's true that most of the light goes toward the rear, but there is enough side-lobe so that I managed to scare myself by putting on my brakes as I was driving past a glass storefront -- I couldn't figure out for a few seconds where that rapid red strobe in my peripheral vision was coming from :) What precipitated my purchase was a state trooper who pulled me over, the day after my bike got back from the dealership where it had gone for the 2008 Wiring Harness Recall. The trooper claimed he couldn't see my brake light, and when I looked, I had to agree with him. I am sure I will not have that particular issue again as long as the LED's keep working. ...And while I'm on the subject: the dealership that replaced the wiring harness managed to swap the high-beam and low-beam wires on my headlights and failed to adjust the rear-brake light switch so it would work at all. Why do dealer dweebs have round shoulders and flat foreheads? Because the first time you ask them about a screw-up, they shrug their shoulders; and the second time, they bang their foreheads with the palms of their hands. +1 on the light. I have had that light for a number of years also. There are a few guys at work that get behind me on the way home (east with setting sun hitting my tail)and with the stock light there were days they told me they couldn't tell it was on when braking. With that LED one they the same guys all remarked at what an improvement it was. I have mine set to the flash a few times and then steady mode. Dan
