speedometer mystery?

Post by kevbennett@sbcglobal.net » Fri Jun 26, 2009 5:37 pm

Hoping for some help with the speedometer on my '96 KLR. Everything was peachy, then the needle started wandering a bit during a ride. Next ride, everything's great. Next ride, everythings great for 30 miles, then it reads about half speed for 30 miles, then it hovers around 10 mph even though I'm going 70. Today, everything is great for 20 miles, then the needle goes dead, although it comes to life again when I do a hard left turn with plenty of lean. I've checked the connections at both ends of the speedo cable. I removed the front wheel and checked the mechanism in there; nothing seemed out of place. Seems like it has to be something in the speedometer itself. I'm just a bit reluctant to dive in there. Your ideas and suggestions are welcome! Kevin

Kevin,Please do not take this the wrong way, I understand that not knowing how fast you are going can be a real pain, BUT, I've my bike since June of '05 and I found myself relying more on the noise of the Thumper, and tach. to tell me what to do,and when, I am sure some one in the list has an answer to your problem, the speedo is off anyways

speedometer mystery?

Kevin, Did you pull the cable out of its housing? Did it come out in one piece? In my experience, a defective speedo will have the needle jumping up to high speeds because the bearing is worn and parts are starting to drag. Double check your cable if your odo also stopped. Mine just quit when the end of the cable twisted off on me while back. Dooden A15 Green Ape (bout 1.3 miles short of 12,000 miles)

high speed, heat soaked, power fade?

Post by Rick McCauley » Sun Jun 28, 2009 6:24 am

Might be some tiny particles laying in the bottom of the float bowl. When they get stirred up they can pass thru the main jet causing a lean situation. Especially if they lodge in there for a few seconds before passing thru. Years ago I started draining my float bowl every thousand miles or so. It helps keep tiny rust particles or whatever out of the float bowl. Particles tiny enough to get thru a filter can group together after a long enough time to cause problems. Remember how the bike of years ago had that little sediment bowl on the petcock. Unfortunately,on most newer bikes, the float bowl is now the sediment bowl. Rick A17

Long hot ride, 30 miles into it, 95f outside, humid, get on a stretch of highway where the traffic is flying 75mph or more. I get up to speed and hold throttle absolutely still, with the least throttle possible while still holding 75 mph and about 5400rpm. hold it there minute after minute. Temp guage indicates normal, just a tick over straight up. Almost like it gradually leaned out, or heat build up caused ignition faulter, or something carburation wise was plugged. I get a power fade, sputter, after which I quickly festher the throttle and get power back just fine after perhaps 2 seconds. I stopped for a few minutes and restarted and within three miles, replicated the effect. I stop and fuel up and purchase a can of sea foam. dump about half the can in. Then runs fine for another 20miles, as though nothing ever happended. any ideas guys?? todd in Chaska [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
