I was wondering how many miles to expect out of my stock chain, I have a 99 A13 with 14K on it, I've only had to adjust it twice so far, keeping the slack around 2", and try to lube it every 100 miles or so. thanks, krdr2001

Mine went about 20k. Could have gone more but the front sprocket was pretty warn before a trip so I changed the whole drivetrain. I only oiled it about every 4-500 miles; used gear oil. That was pretty messy so I'm experimenting with WD-40; about 15k so far. Bogdan

I got 25,000kms (16,000 miles approx.) out of mine. Mine started making a 'clunking' sound if I didn't lube it before every ride. I figured it was time. I replaced with an inexpensive DID o-ring. I kept original sprockets since they looked good still. I did put on a 14t front sprocket soon after the new chain though. And what are you doing lubing every 100 miles? There has got to be better ways to spend your time Besides the time it takes, add up what it costs you in lube, I can't see it being worth doing that often. The chain I bought was $85 CDN, about $60 US. You've gotta be spending about that much in lube for the life of the chain. For the cost reason also, I didn't replace the sprockets. I figure even if I cut the chain life in half, the sprockets would cost at least as much as the chain if not more so, so I'm slightly ahead of the game and will replace the whole set next time around. FWIW, I used equal lubings of either Maxima chain wax or WD-40 to lube my original chain, just whatever can was handier to hand at the time. Karl

what do you average for chain life? I averaged about 9,000mi. with the four I've had. While we're at it what about your rear tire?

My original chain died an ugly death at about 9k, taking both sprockets with it in a hurry when it started to shed rollers. I don't know what treatment it got for the its first 4k. I'm hoping for better results with a Loobman. My Kenda k270 rear still has significant tread after 6k. I'm very pleased with it except for the damage it did to my relocated plate and inner fender.

I have 18K on origional chain,it is still within wear limits hope to get another 5-10K outta it. Just lube it every 200-300 miles and clean it ocassionally. Roy Cope

I don't know how you guy's are getting so much mileage out of your chains and sprockets. I just hit 14,000 and mine is streched and my front sproket has no teeth left on it. Had to borrow a used sprocket from fellow KLR (thanks steve). I got the box of parts from Fred at arrowhead yesturday (thanks fred). I don't think I will try and squeeze every last mile out of this set. I had to turn back on a camping trip last weekend due to front sprocket haveing no teeth left (not cool).

I have 14k on my chain with very little stretch. I haven't had to adjust it for over 5k miles. Basically, my maintenance consists of blasting it with WD40 when I get home form work every second day. When traveling I will blast it with WD40 every 150 miles or so. The rear sprocket is in great shape, still the OEM. The front sprocket has almost 12k on it and is beginning to wear some. It is from Sprocket Specialists (16t). While on the subject of chains, does anyone have an opinion on the RK X ring brand of chain? Brad

List, The bike is a KLR 250. In your experience- How long would you expect a OEM non-O/ring chain to last? (chain and sprokets with 1000 miles on them now) --given proper maintenance of 200 mile chain lube etc. In the 5K mile range? Or is it 3K mile or 10K mile Yes, I know it is replace on condition--but what should you expect? Chain maintenace: Is 200 miles/maintenace interval often enough for an non- O ring chain? or does it 'need' to be every 100 miles? Conditions will be 3000 typical dual sport miles-- some slab, much gravel some sand some mud some water crossings some smiles. revmaaatin.
