This involves locknuts or jam a piece of fuel hose on the bolt to keep the nut from coming off and protects the bolt against damage. Just putting on a regular nut and then another regular nut jammed up against it is not really very effective as a permanent fix. wtb chain tightening "block"
NyLock has never attempted to come off my bike.
If you use a Jam nut ( reg nut jammed up against adjusting nut), it works best if you can get a thin wrench on the adjusting nut and hold it while snugging up the jam nut.
Perhaps a dab of Silicon over the nut and threads might do also, as would a drop or two of Blue Locktite, ( I use the stick form of locktite myself, looks like a glue stick tube )

mounting happy trails cans
A buddy of mine just got his Happy Trails Side boxes, but he didn't get them pre-drilled. Is there any rule of thumb for height or positioning of the cans for drilling and mounting? I'm someone, or many someones have done this, or perhaps there is even something written somewhere about doing this?
Thanks in Advance,

I have no experience with these but I'd error on the side of keeping them higher. I've witnessed several swollen angles from riders steadying themselves in a slow turn and getting their foot / leg trapped under a low hardcase as the bike moves forward while leaned over a bit. A higher case position reduces the chances of this happening.

mounting happy trails cans
When I mounted my ammo cans to my Happy Trails SU rack, I was in a hurry to do so and try them out. Luckily my dad was around that dad and slowed me down a bit. What he did was to make a cardboard template the same size as the side of the pannier. We then got my bike sitting level using my motorcycle jack. We could move the template around and see how things looked for clearance of passenger footpegs, turn signals and such, then I was able to mount the bike so we could have another good look at the fitment. Once we had the template where I wanted it, he took and made a mark on the cardboard through the mounting holes on the rack. He laid the template on the pannier, transferred the mark, I drilled the holes and voila! Perfect fit the first time. I agree with the previous posters, higher is better. mounting happy trails cans
TP,
I just mounted a pair of the Whitehorse press boxes with their mounts on my
08. I will post the pics as soon as I get to it but in general I positioned
them slightly lower than the rack so I could get into them with the dry bags
on. I chose the top hole location to be in a place where the knobs would
turn freely without being too close to the top edge and no lower than that.
I drill the two top holes first and the rest follows suit. If you were to
pull a bracket off it would make it easier to lign up these holes but this
is not a requirement. Just make sure the top holes are lined up perfect
before drilling. In other words measure about fifty time and drill once.
Once you drill a hole the boxes are yours.
Drill one box completely, top holes and bracket holes and mount it to be
sure everything is right. If you missed then bring it to a welder and get
the missed hole filled then fix it. Make the first box perfect, this takes
time but is worth your effort.
Next step is to clamp the boxes together back to back and drill through the
other. This saves time but you need to do a few things before you do this or
YOU WILL screw up the second box. Find a piece of tubing, I used copper,
that fits through the established hole snugly then a drill bit that fits
snug through it. This will make sure the hole in the second box is centered
exactly where the one in the first box, pilot hole box, is without damaging
or elongating the holes in the first box.
The reason for this is that the angle on the tip of the drill bit gets the
outer edge of the drill bit too close to or even over the top of the pilot
hole allowing the drill bit to wonder. If it wonders a little then starts
cutting it will drill where it started cutting through both boxes at the
wrong place. In other words all your careful work on the first one went to
hell and the second one wont fit. Do not disregards this step. I will put
some images of how to do this up when I do the page
The other problem is how to drill in the tight space. Harbor Freight has a
right angle drill attachment. Buy it. Don t whine about the money because it
is way cheaper than the boxes. They also have a right angle drill which will
work but cost more. To use that you will need to chop off a drill bit or two
so they are short enough
The mounting instructions from all the companies kind of suk. I was thinking
of doing a general how to mount panniers page. I have done Seahorse and
Pelican boxes as well as two brands of Aluminum boxes on different brands of
frames now. I have pics from most of them. Some generic instructions would
probably be a boon to anybody doing it for the first time. Just need to find
the time!!!!! For now just try the above
them pre->drilled. Is there any rule of thumb for height or positioning o the cans for >drilling and mounting?
