A friend called this afternoon to be rescued. While out for a ride on his 1992 650 the bike lost power and died. He said that when he would start it it would be fine and then die when he applied power. When I got there we jumped it (battery dead) and it started just fine. Rev it up and seemed fine. Put it in gear and eased out on the clutch. Tach needle shot to zero and motor died. The bike would start in nuetral with the clutch out or in gear with the clutch squeezed. With the trans in nuetral the clutch lever could be in or out and all was fine. As soon as it was put in gear and the clutch eased out the tach needle would go to zero and motor would cut off. We took the clutch switch apart and cleaned the contacts but it did nnot make a difference. Not sure where the nuetral switch is. There does not appear to be a sidestand switch. Any and all advice appreciated. Shame of all shame we had to (glup) trailer the bike back to his house.

clutch switch or nuetral switch bad?
It sounds like the kick stand safety switch. There are tips out there to bypass it. It is under the cover on the left side of the motorcycle.

Bill,
It sounds to me as if the circuit to the sidestand switch is open. Assuming the switch was removed from the bike, there would likely be a jumper wire inserted into the connector for the sidestand switch. Perhaps the jumper has come loose.

After two months of snow and cold, I finally got out for 130 mile 'fix' today. Last weekend it was 10 deg but today it was 70 deg. I know it's early but at least now there's hope.

Did he 92 have sidestand switch? The reason I ask is that we could not find any wires behind the cover on the left. There was something that looked like a starter solinoid but nothing else. I think when I bypassed the switch on my 02 the wires were still behind the cover. Would they be somewhere else?
Thanks for the info, I shall look again.
