genr'l question what light bulbs?

Post by Lee Dodge » Wed Feb 25, 2009 3:08 pm

The Rev is basically right with respect to the change from 1 brand of filament bulb to another however might I suggest that the bulb DOES have an effect on Beam Pattern. The reflector and the lense change the relatively small point of light, the filament, into a reflected (the reflector) and refracted (the lense) distribution of that light. The design of reflector is dependent on the assumption the source of light will be in ONE spot. If it's not where the reflector design expects it to be the beam pattern is changed. So just how precise are the filament locations between the various bulbs? I don't know, I know there are tolerances in every dimension that defines the bulb in the manufacture of these bulb, so maybe . . . . Sounds to me like a problem for "Watt-Man". And his arsenal of instrumentation, insights and investigative propensity. The Sherlock Holmes of the KLR list. (Sorry Bill, I couldn't resist. Besides, you get so much more riding time than those of us in the Northern latitudes) Inquisitive-in-Wisconsin (aka Lee Dodge) If my memory is correct that is why we weren't able to exchange our conventional headlight bulbs for the HID 'bulbs' and get anything better than more light - but lousy beam control. The reflectors were different as was the placement of the HID arc Vs our conventional bulb filaments.

NKLR To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Date: Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 12:30 PM The pattern is determined by the reflector and lens, not the bulb. If you bought the silver stars from Walmart, they are probably the Sylvania silver stars - NOT the Osram silver stars. *Any* tint on a bulb will decrease light output. Don't take it from me, take it from the experts. Much brighter than stock and have a better light pattern. They do put more light in my path, not sure how it would effect my KLR however. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Even with the economy literally "in the crapper" we should all take the time to say thanks and give what you can to this cause. Wonder how many dollars are going towards Veterans benefits, hospitals, etc with the recent stimulus bill? Probably nothing! Anyone know?
