nklr death valley riding season now; whoops snowstorm

Not sure if this is a KLR or NKLR post... Sorry about the snowstorm that blew in. Last Tuesday the weather said all clear. On Thursday, the weather said 20% chance of rain on Sunday. On Sunday, there was a high wind snow storm above 4000 ft. Pouring rain and gusts below 4000 feet. A friend went by himself with alcohol, tent, sleeping bag and granola to Saline Hot Springs and survived. We were worried so notified the ranger to keep an eye on his van Lower elevations weren't too bad but to get anywhere, you had to go through mtn passes. I never saw so many large KTMs and BMWs riding on dirt.

Jim I am not sure about an 01 but on my 08 I was coming home the friday when my bike quit. All the lights went out, no dash lights head light the same as you. I would check the fuse (see below ) because most batteries do not quit all at once unless they short internally. The battery might be old and low in power but it should produce some light from the headlamp and the dash lights. Mine quit because a fuse blew. The big one by the started relay. I am assuming it is the same on an 01. The reason the fuse blew I had an electrical short in the OE wiring up where the frame rails meet the fork bearing support. (where the forks pivot) I had to take the tank off to get at the short. I had to push my bike home about 1.1 Kilometers. It made a slight noise, I think, then the green light went out, and nothing. No headlight, nothing. So I assumed a electrical short, pulled the four year old Yuassa and looked over the wiring. The wires looked fine so I cleaned the started and kill switches and waited for the battery to charge. Next I prepared to reconnect the battery but decided to check the voltage and amperage. Now I suspect the battery has shorted out as the voltage drops from 12 to 9 while on the multimeter. Now to my question can I continue to diagnose this issue by using a car battery to roll the starter over? Will the increased amperage of a car battery harm the electrics on my KLR?
