pelican case
I am considering mounting a model 1500 Pelican case on my rear carrier. This is a low case, about 7" high and has a flat top, so you can bungy cord stuff on top of it. I'm hoping someone on the list who has already done this could answer a few questions.
Where can I get the best deal on the case?
How did you mount it?
Is there a similar case that locks?

Hi Craig. I did a similar project using a Doscocil box that I purchaed on E-Bay for $20. I mounted it using the same method that Old Rice used to mount his. It is constructed by using composite decking material and making a simple dovetail. Two pieces are bolted to the bike and two to the case. An aluminum rod runs though all four parts to keep the case from sliding off the back of the bike. The case has provisions for padlocks molded into it. I do have some pictures from Old Rice that I can send you if you are interested. Ebay probably has the best deal on a 1500 with no foam. I haven't looked in awhile, but they used to be $40-$50 there. For a low-profile case that locks (and has a great mounting system), I'd go with a Givi E36. It's a little less utilitarian looking than the Pelican too. (Although I like Pelicans for side panniers.) Craig,
I like mounting a plastic cutting board to my rear rack and then mounting
the Pelican to that. If I'm going to drill holes in the bottom of a Pelican,
that way I can drill them where I want. This way I can mount it where I want
and not re-drill it for each new installation in case I want to move it or
use it somewhere else.
Wal-Mart has cheap cutting boards that can be cut down and drilled for this
purpose and you can make them a bit oversized with holes around the rim to
hook bungee cords to for strapping "stuff" on your KLR or whatever other
bikes you might have.

Craig, let me add a little to this conversation... I have Pelican boxes on the rear and sides of my 08... I decided to drill into the OEM rack to mount the box. The reason was that the metal sub-frame of the rack. I wanted to be sure that my mounting bolts went through the metal sub-frame. After drilling the holes in the rack, I removed the rack and placed it on the bottom of the Pelican top box and marked the holes. I used large fender washer inside of the box, not sure it was necessary.

PS May can take a picture...

I bought an Orange (color) Pelican on ebay for $10.00!
The Pelican was used and had holes cut in the sides.
I patched the holes, and mounted the Pelican over my
rear rack using longer bolts with plastic spacers
between the Pelican and the rack. It does not leak,
and makes a great box for tools, rain suit, etc.
Someday I am going to paint it with black spray-on
truck bed liner so that it will match my Pelican Side
bags. The total investment for rear Pelican was about
$35.00!

I have gotten a few SeaHorse cases from Fuerte for work. I haven't gone
crazy looking for price but they were lower than the others I saw when I got
the first cases. They have a good selections, several brands and have been
good to work with also.
Fuerte is here

The only other one I have ever looked at is linked here but I haven't done
business with them yet

Craig you might want to look at my system, I mounted it directly to the OEM rear rack.
